UW-M Crowns First NCWA All-American

Grand Rapids, MI
Wrestling clubs from over 100 colleges and universities competed in the
National Collegiate Wrestling Association this year. At regional
tournaments around the country, 62 of those teams qualified at least one
wrestler for the 2006 NCWA National Tournament. Thursday night, the
Wrestling Club at UW-Milwaukee was awarded a wildcard entry for Darin
Kwilinski (165 lbs., Seymour HS), bringing the number of UW-M national
qualifiers to seven, after six qualified outright at the North Central
Conference tournament.
Along with Kwilinski, Nick Tadeo (133 lbs., Franklin HS), Jon Rynish (149
lbs., Seymour HS), David Vanden Avond (157 lbs., Green Bay Preble HS),
Sean Lueck (157 lbs., Germantown HS), Adam Pearson (235 lbs., Beloit
Memorial HS), and club founder and president Gabriel Wahhab (Brookfield
Central HS) also qualified for the national tournament. These seven
wrestlers traveled to the national tournament, seeking to earn
All-American honors. To become an NCWA All-American, the wrestlers would
have to finish in the top six in the nation in their respective weight
classes.
UW-M came out strong at the 2006 NCWA National Championships on Friday,
scoring enough points for third place in the team standings after the
first round of wrestling. Gabe Wahhabs performance against Jon Peters of
Pensacola Christian in the second round highlighted the teams intensity,
as he shocked the crowd by throwing the defending national champion to his
back three times, pulling out to a quick 8-1 lead. It wasn't quite
enough, though, as the champ chipped away at Gabe's lead and, despite a
9-9 score at the end of the 7-minute match, Peters was awarded 1 point for
his riding time advantage, giving him a 10-9 victory. Though he bounced
back with a win in the next round, Wahhab was later defeated in another
nail-biter, this time losing 3-2 to the eventual 3rd place winner. The
team continued to be challenged as it moved its way through the 32-man
brackets. Four wrestlers, Tadeo, Rynish, Vanden Avond, and Pearson,
started out the tournament 2-0 and qualified for the quarterfinals, but
they fell short of qualifying for the semifinal match, losing to the
eventual 3rd place, 4th place, 1st place and 3rd place winners,
respectively. All seven UW-M wrestlers won at least one match on the first
day of competition.
Tadeo, Rynish, Vanden Avond and Pearson remained in the running for
All-American on Saturday, the second day of competition. But Rynish and
Pearson were stopped short in their first matches Saturday morning, with
Rynish losing a tight 4-2 match against conference champion Mack Mroz, who
finished 3rd in the tournament, and Pearson losing by fall to Bo Noah of
Catawba, the 5th place finisher. Tadeo won his first match Saturday 7-6
over Southern Indiana's Joe Hillenbrand, but his impressive run ended
there, as he was stopped 4-0 in his last match against conference rival
Allen McMillian of Mott CC. Overall, Nick went 3-2 in his first national
tournament, finishing in the top 8, just short of All-American honors.
One wrestler, Dave Vanden Avond, did earn All-American honors, becoming
UW-Ms first NCWA All-American wrestler, with a sixth place finish. Vanden
Avond went 3-1, losing only to repeat national champion Billy Johnson of
Grand Valley State. In his last match, a battle against Greg Girard of
Adirondack CC, Dave came out with a 7-4 victory but suffered a torn knee
ligament, which forced him to forfeit his final two matches.
The team ultimately finished 17th out of the 62 teams that qualified
wrestlers for the tournament.

UW-M Wrestlers Qualify 6 for Nationals!
-Toledo, OH
The Wrestling Club at UW-Milwaukee continued its impressive run in the
NCWA this weekend, as 6 of the 8 UWM wrestlers who competed, qualified for
next week's National Championships. Despite fielding wrestlers in only
five weight classes, the team finished tied for 4th out of the 18 teams in
the North Central Conference. Most weight classes were set up as 32-man
brackets, with the top 7 finishers in each weight class automatically
qualifying for Nationals.
Adam Pearson again led the team, as he charged his way through the 235-lb.
bracket. Pearson, seeded #3 in his bracket, started the tournament with
two first-period pins, followed by an 11-1 major decision in the
semifinals. He capped off the day with a 5-3 decision over 3-time NCWA
All-American and last year's National Runner-up John Stolle of Grand
Valley State University, in which Pearson controlled all the action.
Three wrestlers took the long road to the medal stand, overcoming all but
one opponent on the way to 3rd place. True freshman Nick Tadeo (133 lbs.)
started out as the #3 seed and followed through by going 3-1, losing only
to eventual champion Joe Mendez from Grand Valley, a 4X state champion.
Nick then challenged Allen McMillan of Mott CC for the true second place
match, but came up short, losing 7-10. Jon Rynish (149 lbs.) won his first
two matches of the day to qualify for the semifinals, where he lost to
eventual runner-up Mack Mroz. He then proceeded to win his next 2 matches,
including a 9-0 major decision over Cortez Flynn of Mott for 3rd place.
Dave Vanden Avond (157 lbs.) also lost in the semifinals to an eventual
runner-up, but followed that loss with two solid wins, a 9-0 major
decision and a first period pin in the 3rd place match.
Club President Gabe Wahhab (149 lbs.) kept his All-American hopes alive by
winning 3 straight matches, including two pins, after losing his first
match of the day, then recovered from a loss to teammate Rynish by winning
the 5th place match as well. Sean Lueck (157 lbs.) also qualified for the
National Championships, going 2-2 on the day and finishing in 6th place,
after a tight 10-11 loss in the last match.
Darin Kwilinski (165 lbs.) and AJ Martinez, Jr. (165 lbs.) wrestled well
against some very tough opponents, as the result of tough draws, but came
up short, going 1-2 and 0-2 on the day.

UW-M Wrestlers Shine in Florida Classic
Along with their shorts and sunglasses, the wrestling club at UW-Milwaukee
took their tenacious, “til’ the whistle” style of wrestling with them down
to Florida this weekend, bringing home four individual medals in a field
of 18 NCWA http://www.ncwa.net/ club teams. The Florida Classic marked the first NCWA
tournament for the UW-Milwaukee wrestlers. The wrestlers used the
experience they gained from facing D-I, -II, and –III competitors this
season to make an immediate and resounding statement in the NCWA.
As a result of their 60% winning record at the tournament, the team jumped
to #14 on both the national coaches’ poll, as well as the team points
standings. One indication of good things to come was the team’s
challenging for a top-3 finish throughout the tournament, in a field that
included four national Top 10 teams, despite the fact that UW-M fielded
wrestlers in only five weight classes.
At 235 lbs., Volunteer Assistant Coach and wrestler Adam Pearson competed
for the second time this season, and led the way with a gold medal, going
3-0, with two pins, including a dominating performance in the finals, as
he led 9-0 before pinning his opponent in the second period. Fellow
235-lb. teammate Max Anderson impressed as well, going 4-1, to finish in
3rd place, losing only to Pearson in the semifinals.
Freshman Nick Tadeo also finished 3rd, after putting his aggressive style
into action and recording a breakout 5-1 record, with three pins, on the
day. His only loss came to defending NCWA national champion Chris Johnson
of Pensacola CC. Team officers Jon Rynish, Gabe Wahhab and Darin Kwilinski
were also on top of their games, showing no hesitation in their wrestling
and finishing 3rd, 4th, and top-6, respectively. Rynish edged Wahhab in a
tight, double-overtime victory for the medal, after recording two pins
earlier in the day. Complete results below.
The team returns to action Feb. 11th, when they take on three Ohio teams,
in a quadrangular hosted by the Ohio State club.
