Tickets for NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships


WIAC Conference Tournament
UW-La Crosse will host the WIAC Conference Tournament
Sunday, February 18 in the Mitchell Hall Gymnasium.
Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and wrestling begins at 10:00 a.m.
What a great opportunity to see some great Wisconsin college wrestling.
For those of you who are arriving on Saturday night, there will be a social at the Eagles Nest from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

The UW-La Crosse wrestling team improved to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the WIAC with a 32-10 victory over Eau Claire last night.

Tim Palmer Named WIAC Wrestler of the Week
Week of Jan. 22 - 28

Tim Palmer, Junior (Mankato, Minn./West), 165 pounds of UW-La Crosse
Palmer won the 165-pound title at the Pete Willson Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational.  He went 5-0 in the meet to improve to 32-8 on the season.  Palmer, seeded first, defeated Ian Rammel (Heidelberg) by major decision (15-7); Jon Forbes (MacMurray) by fall (3:28); eighth-seed Kyle Becker (UW-Parkside) by decision (3-1) and fifth-seed Joe Hoover (Manchester) by decision (6-3) to reach the championship match.  Palmer defeated second-seed Phil Kruzel (Univ. of Chicago) by decision (10-4) in the title match.  Kruzel was ranked fifth in NCAA Division III at 165 pounds, while Palmer is unranked.

Next Competition
On Saturday, February 3, some of the team will be traveling to the Blugold Open hosted by the UW-Eau Claire, while others will be competing in the Moco Mercer Open in Dubuque, Iowa.


Pete Willson Wrestling Invitational
The UW La Crosse wrestling team competed in the Pete Willson Wrestling Invitational which was held at Wheaton College this past weekend. Overall, the team took first place with 146.5 team points out of a total of 29 teams. The University of Indianapolis finished second with 134.0 points, while Elmhurst College and North Central College tied for third with 100.0 points. UW-Parkside was fifth with 94.0 points.

Tickets for NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships

Listed below is the information for purchasing advance tickets for the upcoming NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships being hosted by Loras College at the Five Flags Center. I'm not sure if they're planning to do anything differently than they did when they hosted the tournament a few years ago, but at that time, the lines were very long. In fact, there were quite a few people still in line when wrestling began. So if you know you're planning to attend and don't like to wait in line, you might want to consider purchasing advance tickets.

For the second time in a row, Dan Laurent was named WIAC Wrestling Athlete of the Week for the week of January 1-7.

Laurent helped UW-La Crosse to a 24-18 dual victory at third-ranked Luther College (Iowa) on Jan. 6. He defeated John Miller by fall (3:48) in the deciding match at 285 pounds. Miller entered the match ranked second in NCAA Division III. Laurent improved to 18-4 on the season with 10 pins.

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, ranked third in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, defeated thirtieth ranked UW-Whitewater 35-9 in Mitchell Hall in La Crosse, Wisconsin Tuesday night.

Bautista (fr, Des Plaines, IL) raised his record to 15-5 for Whitewater, and Derrik Johnson (jr, Brodhead) recorded his first pin of the year while raising his mark to 18-13. UW-L's Larsen (149), the defending NCAA III champion, and Chelf (174) are both ranked first in their weight class in the national Division III ratings.
UW-Whitewater is 5-4 in dual meets, 0-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-L is 8-1 and 3-1.
UW-Whitewater's next competition will be Friday-Saturday, January 12-13 at the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Warhawks' next action at home will be Thursday, February 1 at 7:00 with UW-Stevens Point visiting Williams Center.

UW La Crosse 32 UW Oshkosh 10
Oshkosh, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse wrestling team improved to 5-1 and 1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with a 32-10 victory at UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night in the Kolf Sports Center.

UW-L won eight of 10 matches to record the victory. Patt Parrillo defeated Kyle Kleuskens 11-7 in the 125-pound match before Dan Akright gave the Titans a 6-3 lead with a win by fall (2:29) over Mark Girgis at 133-pounds.

The Eagles then won the next six matches. Ben Kreuzer defeated Morgan Sickinger 4-3 at 141; Jay Milz defeated Paul Gretzinger 10-0 at 149 and Ross Needham beat Dallas Moe 13-5 at 157 for a 14-6 UW-L lead.

Scott Dorn defeated Kevin Luedtke 9-1 at 165-pounds while Josh Chelf defeated Adam Dorner 11-2 at 174 and Jason Lulloff beat Pat Detmer 14-3 at 184. UW-Oshkosh's Justin Schmalfeldt defeated Andy Moore 10-2 at 197 to cut the Eagles' lead to 26-10, but Dan Laurent pinned Kyle Coleman (2:07) at 285 for the final scoring margin of 32-10

Josh Chelf selected as WIAC Wrestling Athlete of the Week
for the week of November 6-12

Josh Chelf, Junior (Irma/Tomahawk), 174 pounds of UW-La Crosse

Chelf won the 174-pound title at the Harold Nichols Open in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He went 5-0, including three wins over NCAA Division I opponents. Chelf won by major decision (11-0) over Nuezil of Wartburg (Iowa) in his opening match before a major decision victory (10-0) over Northern Iowa's Andy O'Laughlin. He then won by fall (3:44) over Chris Moran of South Dakota State and by decision (7-2) over Grant Turner of Iowa State in the semifinals. Chelf then defeated two-time NCAA Division II champion J.D. Naig of Nebraska-Omaha by decision (7-3) in the title match. Naig was ranked No. 1 at 174-pounds this year in Division II.

The UW-La Crosse wrestling team had their first practice on Monday, October 16, under new Coach Dave Malecek. He’s been very busy finalizing the schedule and getting everything organized for what looks to be a very exciting season. Your first opportunity to see the team will be their public wrestle-offs on Saturday, November 4, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Mitchell Hall, followed by a social.

Hello La Crosse Wrestling Family and Friends. I wanted to write and get you up to speed on what is going on at UW La Crosse. Malecek Named UW-La Crosse Head Wrestling Coach

Dave MalecekLa Crosse, Wis.--The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has named Dave Malecek as its head wrestling coach/exercise sports science instructor/recreational sports development specialist.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to be the head coach at UW-La Crosse," says Malecek. "Joe Baker (UW-La Crosse Athletic Director) and the administration have been very supportive throughout the process. I am eager to meet with the team and coaching staff and get everyone on the same page and start working towards our goals."

"I consider UW-La Crosse to be one of the premiere coaching jobs in NCAA Division III," adds Malecek. "My wife, Kayah-bah, and our triplet daughters are excited about moving to the La Crosse area."

Malecek had served as the head assistant coach at Wartburg College (Iowa) since 2000, helping lead the Knights to three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships (2003, 2004, 2006). He was selected the NCAA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year in 2006. Wartburg also won Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) titles every season since his arrival on campus. The Knights had 11 national champions and 47 All-America selections since Malecek begin coaching in 2000. Malecek was also Wartburg's Wrestling Recruiting Coordinator, Summer Wrestling Camp Director and handled the upper weight classes for the Knights.

A four-time NCAA Division I qualifier at Northern Iowa University (1991-94), Malecek earned All-America accolades in 1994 with a fourth-place finish at 177-pounds. He served as the Panthers' team captain in 1993 and 1994 and ranks seventh in career victories at Northern Iowa. Malecek earned his bachelor's (1994) and master's (2005) degrees from Northern Iowa.

He was a participant in the United States' Olympic Wrestling Trials in 1992 and 1996. Malecek was also a two-time state champion at Osage (Iowa) High School.

Malecek spent two years as head coach at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he recorded 31 dual victories. Xavier also had 10 state qualifiers and one state champion under Malecek's guidance.
Along with his coaching responsibilities at Wartburg, Malecek has served as an instructor in the physical education department since 2001. He has also taught at Wright Elementary School in Cedar Rapids (1997-2000) and in the Aurelia, Iowa Schools (1994-96).

UW-La Crosse finished second at the 2006 NCAA Division III Championships, tied for the best finish in school history. The Eagles also won their ninth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title in 2006.
