The UW-La Crosse wrestling team had a terrific showing at the WIAC
Wrestling Championships yesterday, which were held at UW-Eau Claire. They

Conference (WIAC) Championship with a total of 159 points, which is now

with 119 points, followed by UW-Whitewater with 84 points, UW-Platteville
with 78 points, UW-Eau Claire with 72 points, UW-Oshkosh with 60 points,
and Lawrence with 58 points.
The finals included nine UW-L wrestlers. Seven individuals including Pat

Tournament. The three remaining team members including Mike Rohowetz

News and Notes
A note from Billy Huebner
Head Assistant UW L - Wrestling
The La Crosse wrestlers traveled to Omaha last weekend to compete in the
prestigious Kauffman/Brand Open. The Eagles were coming off a good
showing at the Harold Nichols Open placing 6 wrestlers and coming away
with a combined team record of 41 wins and 28 losses. Omaha would prove
to be a tougher tournament, but UW-L faired well again proving that they
are able to compete with anyone in the country.
A total of 720 wrestlers and 45 teams participated at this exciting
tournament. After all the damage was done and all the battles were over,
the program placed 5 individuals out of 13 winning 33 matches and losing
24.
Tim Palmer of Mankato, MN was coming off an impressive showing at
the Harold Nichols Open and he went to Omaha wanting to do better. He
turned out to be the lone Champion for the eagles. Big things are
happening for Tim as he won 5 matches to become champion. His wins came
from defeating Decota Cotton of Iowa Central CC 9-3, Isaac Copeland of
Dana College 3-1 and Brett Hunter of Chadron State 5-4. Tim then faced
the # 1 seed, Ross Taplin of Nebraska Omaha. Taplin was having a good
tournament as he already had 3 falls on the day. This was also a rematch
from the Harold Nichols Open where Taplin prevailed 5-1. We were fired
up for this match. The first period was scoreless as they came after
each other constantly. Second period Tim chose down and got an escape.
In the third period Taplin chose down and got his escape, making it all
tied up in the third period. Tim got a take down in the middle of the
third period. After a barrage of attacks and reshots Palmer secured the
win 3-2. What a match! He then had Northern Illinois future standout
Brent Ambrosino in the finals. Tim controlled this match. It was
scoreless the first period, but the action was just starting for Tim as
he got a takedown in the second and third period to seal the victory.
Palmer won 5-3. This was a well-deserved victory for Tim Palmer. He
showed some emotion as he yelled and raised both of his fists in the
air, celebrating his reward for his hard work on the day. Tim is a guy
to watch if you are a wrestling fan. He brings a lot of intensity to his
matches. He is a crowd pleaser.
Josh Chelf Irma/Tomahawk, WI. Josh had a great tournament by
placing third and going 3 and 1 for the day. He opened up a win over
Division I Nate Lee of Boise State by a margin of 10-3. He then faced
University of Iowa’s Rick Loera recording a fall in 4:55. Josh then
faced Tommy McCarty in the semis from Labbet College. Josh lost this
match 4-2 in the final seconds. It was a hard fought match, but Josh
just fell a little short. Josh then had to focus on battling back for
third place. It is something Josh was not happy about, but he understood
that it was important. Josh advanced to the third place match to face
the University of Nebraska’s Craig Bester for his last match of the
night. Josh scored two takedowns in this match and won 5-3. It was a
nice win over a division one opponent to end the day. In the last two
weeks Josh has had six wins over Division I competition. It was Great
day of wrestling for him. Josh has high expectations as he is currently
ranked number 2 in the nation. He has a lot of work ahead of him. Josh
is hungry and ready for his next competition. Josh is a lot of fun to
watch and he is another crowd pleaser.
Josh Zabel of Rochester, MN. To put it simply, Zabel is a gamer.
He had 29 wins last year as a freshman. That’s a pretty impressive
record considering that he wrestled three weight classes for us (165,
174 and 184). This year Josh is getting after it again. He pulled out an
impressive 5-2 record on the day in Omaha with two overtime wins and one
fall for the day. Josh took the hard road to place as he lost his first
match to Jay Wood of Nebraska by a score of 3-2. Knowing that he had to
regroup, Josh decided to go on a winning streak through the backside of
the bracket. He recorded wins over Ross McMullen of Labbet College 10-3,
Luther College Greg Meireck by a fall in 1:27, Antione Love of Iowa
Central CC 4-2 in sudden victory, Dan Hospodoka of Nebraska Kearney 6-4
in sudden victory. Josh next match was against Jay Wood of the
University of Nebraska. Jay is the individual Josh lost to first round.
This was a big rematch for him, it is always nice to meet the guy who
put you in the consolation side again in the same tournament. Josh
really turned it up against Wood as he had two take down in the second
and third period to seal the victory 5-2. It was a great feeling for
Josh to get this win back. In his last match of the day he had Jacob
Neuzil of the University of Iowa. This was a great match with a lot of
action, but Josh fell short 5-3 for the fifth place spot from the tough
Hawkeye. All in all, Josh had a great day of wrestling. Seven matches in
total with five wins, not bad for a sophomore.
Jason Lulloff Kiel, WI. Jason entered the tournament with the
idea of duplicating what he did at the Harold Nichols Open the week
before as he defeated the 2X National Champion Akeem Carter in the
finals. The Omaha tournament would prove to be a good challenge for
Jason, as he we found out that he was not even seeded. Jason’s first
match was a rematch against Matt Farrell of Nebraska. Last week Jason
beat Farrel 2-1 in a very hard fought match. This one would prove to be
the same. The first period was scoreless, and in the second period
Farrel chose down. This turned out to be a critical part of the match
for Jason as he chose to ride Farrel out. After a brilliant job on the
top, we went into the third period with the score at 0-0. Jason chose
down in the third and got his escape. Jason led 1 to 0 and secured the
third period for the victory. Jason’s next match was to be against Rusty
Blackmon, who is fighting for the starting spot at Oklahoma State. This
was also an intense match where Jason had two takedowns, one in the
first and the other in the second. The score was 4 to 1 going into the
third. Jason chose down. Blackmon is a very intense rider and this would
be his only chance for him to score on Jason. The third period was the
most intense part of this match. As both wrestlers were going at it on
the mat. Jason was trying to get out and Rusty was doing what he does
best in trying to go for the turn. After all was said and done Jason
came out victorious with a score of 4 to 1. Jason’s next match was
against Division II’s 8th ranked Nate Oviatt from Nebraska Omaha. Jason
got two takedowns and rode out Oviatt to secure the win 4 to 0. In the
semis Jason’s opponent was Division I’s 15th ranked Steve Borja from
Virginia Tech. Jason controlled all three periods as he dominated Borja.
Jason scored a takedown in the first period, two takedowns in the second
and again another takedown in the third. The final score was 9 to 2. The
last match for the 184 pound championship would be against third ranked
Roger Kish of the University of Minnesota. What was funny about this was
that I had talked to Jason that morning and asked him who he was looking
forward to wrestling at the tournament and the first person he mentioned
was Kish. His wish came true as Jason ended up wrestling Kish for the
Championship title. Jason went out in the first period like a bull and
immediately got the first takedown. After over a minute of riding, with
25 seconds left on the clock, the two wrestlers got into an incredible
scramble. In the middle of the exchange Jason dropped down to a powerful
double leg on Kish and drove Kish hard to his back out of bounds. It was
a beautiful double leg, but it was so intense that the ref called him
for a slam. A questionable call and Kish got a penalty point. After
taking some time for recovery, Kish returned to the mat for the final 20
seconds of the first period. He quickly shot out of there for an escape
and before Jason could regroup, Kish was in on a shot that took us down
at the buzzer. The end of the first period unfortunately read 4-2 in
Minnesota’s favor. In the second period Jason chose down and got his
escape. No other points were scored as they went after each other, but
Kish’s defense was tough. The score was 4-3 going into the third. Kish
chooses down in the third and Jason cut him hoping to try to get the
tying takedown. The entire third period Jason kept on Kish going for
that takedown to tie it up, but Jason could not get to him. The match
ended up to be a close one of 5-3. The crowd got their money’s worth on
that one. All in all it was a great, intense tournament for Jason.
Tim Winker of Belgium/Ozaukee, WI. Tim had the best tournament as
an Eagle wrestler going 5-3 on the day and placing 6th. Tim is quite
obviously becoming one of the most improved wrestlers on the team this
year and is also becoming one of the most reliable wrestlers on the
team. Tim’s first win came after he defeated Webster Farris of Dana 3-2.
Tim then suffered a loss in the second round to Dan Ereckson of the
University of Iowa by a score of 11-3. The third match was a win over
Josh Barr of Neosho CC by a margin of 5-4. Tim got another win over Jim
Jones of Labette College, beating him 11-7 in an exciting match. His
next match was against Alec Bonander of Luther College. Tim recorded a
tech fall in 5:55. A loss from Johny Laboranti of Virginia tech by a
score of 5-1 would mean that Tim would be going for fifth or sixth.
Tim’s last match was against Cody Millard of Nebraska. Tim got the first
takedown, but gave up a reversal in the process and a reversal in the
third for Millard secured the win. Tim lost a close and exciting match
by a score of 4-3. Tim’s three losses on the day all came from Division
I opponents. Tim is getting serious about his expectations and is
looking to make some noise this year. The coaching staff feels that his
wrestling capabilities and improvements are really showing out there on
the mat and we are excited for his next competition.
It was a very intense and very tough tournament and in my eyes it is one
of the toughest in the nation. Also for fans this is a tournament to
come watch. It is pretty crazy, seeing how long of a day it turned out
to be. The bus pulled in to La Crosse around 6:30 AM. But it was well
worth it. It was a great for our fans and future perspective wrestlers
that came to watch the eagles wrestle in Nebraska.
From everybody here on the UW-L wrestling family, have a great
thanksgiving and save me some leftovers! Especially you guys that are
watching your weight ;)

UW-L
Head Assistant Wrestling Coach
We opened
our wrestling season with a 31-9 dual
meet
loss to NCAA DI Iowa State
University on
Sunday afternoon, November
6, at Upper Iowa University.
Iowa State, who is ranked
seventh in the preseason polls, won eight of the 10 matches. This
season, they return five NCAA qualifiers including four with
All-American status.
It's not good to lose, but it was a great experience to wrestle some of
the best in front of 1500 wrestling fans. To achieve the goal of being
the best, we must
wrestle the best.
UW-L's
wrestling program will
have the opportunity to
see Iowa State the next
two weekends -- the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open
on November 12 and the
tough Kauffman/Brand Open
on November 19
in
Omaha,
Nebraska. I am personally
very
excited
about the potential
rematches that
could occur -- especially the Jordan Kolinski and Jason Lulloff
rematches with #13
ranked
Jesse Sundell and #3
ranked
Kurt Backus.
These two matches were
very big matches for us at the dual.
Possible
key and exciting match-ups for La
Crosse at
this weekend's Harold
Nichols/Cyclone Open
include the following
(note that their rankings are representative of their division):
n
At 133 lbs.,
rematch between
#13 ranked Jesse Sundell
(SR
at
Iowa State) vs.
#5 ranked Jordan Kolinski.
n
At 141 lbs.,
#2 ranked Nate Gallick
(SR
at Iowa State) vs.
#5 ranked Mike Rohowetz.
Also at 141
lbs.
is
#18 ranked
C.J. Ettelson (SO at
Northern Iowa).
n
At 157
lbs.
is #3 ranked Trent Paulson
(JR at
Iowa State) vs.
#6 ranked Ross Needham.
Also at 157 lbs.
is
#14 ranked Chris Bitetto
(SR at Northern
Iowa).
n
At 165
lbs.
is
#6 ranked Travis Paulson
(JR at Iowa State) and #18 ranked Nick Baima (SR at Northern Iowa)
n
At 174
lbs.
is
#15 ranked David Bertolino
(SO at Iowa State) vs.
Josh Chelf.
They had
a very close match last
year, with Josh
losing in overtime. Also
at 174
lbs.
is
#17 ranked Alex Dolly (SO
at Northern Iowa).
n
At 184
lbs. #3 ranked
Kurt Backus
(JR at Iowa State)
may have a rematch with #4
ranked Jason Lulloff. This
would be a very exciting
match if they meet up again.
n
At HWT, there could be the
rematch of Nebraska Omaha's Les Sigman
(3x NCAA Division
II National Champion) vs.
Ryan Allen (3x
NCAA Division III National
Finalist, 2x National
Champion). This
match went in double overtime last year, with Sigman coming
out on top.
It should
be an exciting weekend!

A Note From Billy Huebner
Head Assistant
Coach - UW-La Crosse Eagles
Sun 10/2/2005

A few rankings that were recently released show
UW-La Crosse in the top ten, but they are not wrestling related yet.
UW-La Crosse is ranked #2 in the Midwest for “Best Public University”
and #10 for the “Best Fit University” in the country.
UW-L #2 in
Midwest for “Best Public University”
The factors contributing to UW-La Crosse receiving
this ranking are well known -- it is due to their academic program, the
surrounding community, and the overall environment at UW-La Crosse. In
addition, the overall campus life supports a healthy lifestyle and gives
students who attend a sense of belonging. It is for these reasons that
UW-La Crosse has one of the highest graduation and retention rates in
the country (as shown in a study conducted by the American Association
of Colleges and Universities).

UW-L #10
Nationally in Fitness
Men's Fitness Magazine has ranked UW-L as the 10th
fittest college in the nation, while UW-Madison was ranked #9. The top
school was Brigham Young University. The magazine partnered with the
Princeton Review and a fitness expert to track the interest and habits
of 10,000 college students from more than 660 colleges and
universities. The survey looked at the campus culture in fitness,
exercise, bad habits, student bodies, and other lifestyle choices. UW-L
is the only smaller university on the Top 10 list and one of only two
Wisconsin schools among the top 25.
www.mensfitness.com/college_rankings/53
As I tell people all the time, what feeds UW-L is
the people and the place. Besides a great wrestling program, UW-L has a
lot to offer students. Many of the rankings such as these help in
promoting the overall university, as well as the wrestling program, to
prospective wrestlers.
I am really looking forward to this upcoming
season, and I will be sure to keep you updated on what LaCrosse
wrestling is up to.

Head Assistant Wrestling Coach

Hello everyone. It’s been a busy summer and school
is about to begin. That means the wrestling season is just around the
corner. I’m very excited about the upcoming season, as I’m sure you
are. To help you get fired up for your season as well as the UW L
wrestling season, I thought I’d give you a review of last year’s results
and update you on what’s ahead.
A Year
in Review
As you know, the UW-La Crosse wrestling team had a
very successful 2004-05 season. They reached an impressive milestone by
winning their eighth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (WIAC) wrestling championship, along with breaking the record
for consecutive titles. This says a lot for the UW L wrestling program.
Seeing nine out of ten maroon singlets in the finals was very exciting
for both the coaching staff and fans, but this only made us hungrier for
more. Our goal is to have ten in the finals, finish with ten conference
champions, and win ten consecutive WIAC team championships. This will
take hard work, discipline, and determination, but we must set our goals
high to be a contender.
At the national level, UW-La Crosse made a lot of
noise at the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships in
Northfield, Minnesota. We had a great showing with seven out of eight
wrestlers earning All-American status and the team finishing in fourth
place overall. This brings the total to five NCAA trophies and 48
All-Americans since 1992. Junior Ryan Allen won his second National
title at heavyweight and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the
Tournament, while Head Coach Nate Skaar was named Rookie Coach of the
Year. In addition, the UW L wrestling program received the Scholar Team
Award from the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), placing
9th, while Adam Kuchnia and Ross Needham were named to the NWCA Scholar
All-American Team.
Some major highlights of the National tournament
included the following:
§
Jordan Kolinski of Rockford, Illinois earned All-American
status as a freshman with a seventh place finish. Coming out of high
school, Jordan was a high-profile wrestler. He lived up to his
reputation last season and proved to the wrestling community that he
will continue to be a force to reckon with. His All-American status was
well deserved.
§
Mike Rohowetz of Spring Green, Wisconsin earned
All-American status as a freshman with an eighth place finish. All last
summer, Mike continued to wrestle and work camps, giving him an edge
over his opponents. Throughout the season, he worked hard and started
to believe in himself, all of which helped him to become an
All-American. Mike came into the tournament unseeded, which makes his
accomplishment that much more amazing.
§
Unseeded Jake Larsen of Turtle Lake, Wisconsin went 4-2,
battling all the way back to fourth place All-American status. Jake
lost his first match of the tournament in triple overtime, which meant
he had to come up the backside of the bracket in his quest for
All-American status. This is very difficult to accomplish as the odds
are against you. But scrappy, hard-nosed Larsen beat the odds. Because
of his strong will and determination, he is the type of wrestler that
can go into those triple overtime situations and make wrestlers want to
break and give up. It was amazing watching his opponents take timeouts
-- nobody wanted to wrestle Jake.
§
Ross Needham of Marshfield, Wisconsin lost a 5-4 decision
to returning National Champion Marcus LeVesseur. This match went down
to the wire and everyone at the tournament was watching it. It was very
intense, as this was the first time LeVesseur had been taken down all
year. I can see this season’s finals -- Ross Needham versus Marcus
LeVesseur. That would be a crowd pleaser.
§
Nick Ammerman of Holmen, Wisconsin earned All-American
status with a sixth place finish. It was great to see Nick come back
from Oregon to give back to his community and finish what he started at
UW-La Crosse. Nick is now a 2x All-American. Nick will be coaching for
UW L this year -- we are very excited about this.
§
Josh Chelf of Irma, Wisconsin earned All-American status
as a freshman with a sixth place finish. After turning many schools
down last year to attend UW-La Crosse, I think Josh will agree that UW L
was a great choice for him. Josh was a menace to many ranked wrestlers
in the 174- and 184-pound weight classes and will continue to be a
strong contender in all divisions this year. Who knows -- Josh could
beat Ryan Allen’s school win record. He’s on pace already with 38 wins
last season. That would be something to see and scary for his
opponents.
§
Jim Swanson of Roscoe, Illinois came unseeded into the
tournament and finished with a fifth place All-American status. Jim is
quite a specimen in how fast he moves for a big guy. He works very hard
and continues to just get better. Being very strong and quick makes a
great combination for Jimbo but makes him dangerous to his competition.
§
Ryan Allen of Livingston, Wisconsin won his second
National title at heavyweight, was named Outstanding Wrestler of the
tournament, and now has 120 career victories. He is on pace to win his
third national title and achieve over 160 college wins. Ryan’s goals
for this season are very high but realistic. Winning another NCAA title
and possibly a Midlands Championship could happen for Ryan Allen, a.k.a.
Rhino. Setting his goals very high makes a person like Ryan make these
accomplishments happen. What also helps him is that he is still growing
and still absorbing wrestling knowledge. He has not yet reached his
full potential. That’s a good thing because Ryan could excel even
faster to become a world-class wrestler after his college career is
complete.
The 2004-2005 UW L Wrestling
Banquet Awards
The following awards were presented at the 2004-05
UW L wrestling banquet:
§
11th Man Award was presented by Nate Skaar to Scott
Dorn of Arcadia, WI.
§
Most Improved was presented by Corey Ruff to Jake
Larson of Turtle Lake, WI.
§
The One Tough Bird (awarded based on how tough an
individual wrestles in tournaments) was presented by Corey Day to Tim
Palmer of Mankato, MN and Nick Ammerman of Holmen, WI.
§
The Lonning Award was presented by Billy Huebner to
Jason Lulloff of Kiel, WI. This award is given to the individual who
has three traits to excel above others: dedication, discipline, and
sacrifice.
§
Outstanding Freshman was presented by Rob Jankowski
to Josh Chelf of Irma, WI.
§
Highest GPA was presented by Rob Szmanda to Ross
Needham of Marshfield, WI.
§
Most Falls was presented by Chris Passe to Ryan
Allen of Livingston, WI.
§
Most Wins was presented by Chris Passe to Ryan
Allen
§
Hardest Worker (otherwise known as the Penzkover
Award) was presented by Billy Huebner to Ross Needham.
§
Outstanding Wrestler was presented by Nate Skaar to
Ryan Allen.
What We Have
to Look Forward to in the Upcoming Season . . .
Coach Nate Skaar has once again been named interim
coach for the 2005-06 wrestling season. In our quest for a National
Championship in New Jersey this season, we are fortunate that all of
last year’s National qualifiers will return with the exception of Nick
Ammerman. In addition, 2x All-American Jason Lulloff will be returning
from an injury, along with a great recruiting class that will help
solidify our goal to bring back an NCAA trophy every year.

A few stops on the road to a National Championship
include the following:
§
We will begin the season by wrestling Iowa State on
November 6 -- everyone is very fired up about that.
§
The team will then return to the tough Harold Nichols Open
in Fort Dodge, Iowa on November 12 to face more Division I competitors.
§
To add to the excitement, we are adding the brutal Kaufman
Open held in Omaha, Nebraska on November 19. Powerhouse Oklahoma State
and the University of Minnesota will be there, along with other top
Division I competitors.
§
The 2005 UW-La Crosse team invitational on December 3
should prove to be even stronger this year.
§
A return to the 2005 Midland Championships held at
Northwestern University should test our program even further.
The tentative schedule for the 2005-06 season is as
follows:
