UW-L Finishes 4th Place at Nationals

What a great weekend it was for La Crosse wrestling at St. Olaf College this past weekend. La Crosse finished in 4th place with 72.0 points. Augsburg College won with 162.0 points, while Wartburg was second with 104.5 points and Luther College was third with 100.0 points. Coach Skaar was named Rookie Coach of the Year.

Ryan Allen won his second straight 285-pound national title and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Six other wrestlers earned All-American honors including the following:

n Jake Larsen (149 lbs.) - 4th Place
n Jim Swanson (197 lbs.) - 5th Place
n Nick Ammerman (165 lbs.) - 6th Place
n Josh Chelf (174 lbs.) - 6th Place
n Jordan Kolinski (125 lbs.) - 7th Place
n Mike Rohowetz (133 lbs.) - 8th Place

The seven All-American honors for UW-L this season are the most in school history at one national championship.

Ross Needham (157 lbs.) also competed. Unfortunately Ross met undefeated Marcus LeVesseur of Augsburg in the quarter finals, losing a close battle by a score of 5-4. He then lost in double overtime in the consolation round.

Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational
Wheaton, Illinois
Friday and Saturday, February 4-5, 2005

The 2005 Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational concluded on Saturday afternoon with 3rd ranked University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse winning the 27 team event in dominating fashion, finishing with 178 points. Five individual champions and three more place winners led the Eagles' campaign. John Carroll University, ranked 12th in Division III, was the closest competition -- they finished in second place with 98.5 points.

National Champion Ryan Allen was named the recipient of the George Olson "Outstanding Wrestler" Award. Allen defeated Matt Overman of Manchester College in an 18-8 major decision in the championship match. The "Outstanding Wrestler" Award is named after George Olson, the head wrestling coach at Wheaton from 1945-74. The award was presented to Allen by three people with close ties to Coach Olson: his daughter, Jody Olson Breen; Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the U.S House of Representatives; and Tom Jarman, a National Champion wrestler at Wheaton and current head wrestling coach at Manchester College. Hastert and Jarman both wrestled for Olson at Wheaton. Ryan has now won this tournament three times and will go for his fourth title next year.

#7 Ranked Captain Ross Needham was seeded #5 in the tournament. Ross was determined to wrestle above his seed and that he did. He defeated the #1 ranked 157 lb. wrestler in Division II, Mitch Napier, from Indianapolis University by a score of 7-5 in the semi-finals. Ross continued to wrestle tough in the finals, winning the tournament. This year alone, Ross has defeated three NCAA Division II ranked wrestlers.

#8 Ranked Jim Swanson pinned two wrestlers on his way to win his second consecutive Wheaton title at 197 lbs. Jim had a narrow win over UW-Parkside standout wrestler John Goral in the finals. .

#8 Ranked Jordan Kolinski, our 125 lb. freshman Illinois standout, dominated all of his opponents this weekend, winning all of his matches by major decision (by a score of 12-4 in the finals). If not for Allen, Kolinski looked to take the outstanding wrestler award.

#2 Ranked Nick Ammermann won his first tournament in a UWL singlet. Seeded #1 in the tournament, Ammermann was not to be upset, winning the tournament in a controlling fashion. Earlier in the year, Nick had some big matches. He has beaten the NAIA #1 ranked wrestler, Ryan Guffey of William Penn, and has suffered some close losses against 5th ranked NCAA Division I Travis Paulson of Iowa state and to 13th ranked NCAA Division I Nick Baima of Northern Iowa by a score of 3-1. Both matches went toe to toe and were pretty intense.

The team is now currently focusing on the WIAC Championships coming up on Sunday, February 20 at Lawrence University. The program will be going for its 8th straight Conference Championship. If the Eagles can accomplish this feat, it will be a conference record for consecutive titles. Coach Skaar has the program peaking towards the end of the year, focusing on a countdown of practices all leading to Appleton.

NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals presented by Hershey's SmartZone

Friday and Saturday, January 20-21, 2005

The young but hard-nosed UW-La Crosse wrestling team had fun competing at the National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio this past weekend.  We put on a great show for the fans out East.  It was another strong showing by the Eagles, going 4-1.  Their hard work paid off in the end with the team bringing home a 3rd place finish.  The team is currently ranked 4th in the country with an overall record of 17-4.  Augsburg won the show by defeating Wartburg in the finals in a close meet.

The UWL team wrestled well and many guys turned the corner this past weekend.  Throughout the two-day tournament, we had many exciting matches and every dual was a good challenge.  As coaches, we were very pleased to see some improvements throughout the lineup.  These duals set the foundation for the rest of the season, and the guys can now focus on bringing home a NCAA trophy this year.

The UWL wrestlers who competed this past weekend included the following:

The key match here was at 133 lbs.  Delaware Valley’s 2nd ranked senior Barry Wise defeated freshman standout Mike Rohowitz in overtime 8-6.  This was such a great match to watch and it was a great measuring stick for Mike to see how he could wrestle against a seasoned All-American.

Another good match was at 174 lbs.  Formerly unranked freshman Josh Chelf defeated All-American senior Jason Shivak by a score of 6-5.  Chelf is currently ranked 6th in the country after this showing.  This was a great test for Josh.  He was taken down in the first period but was then able to control the action in the last two periods.

At 184 lbs, Delaware Valley’s 5th ranked senior Andrew Helms defeated freshman standout Josh Zabel in a close 5-3 match.  This was also a good measuring stick for the coaches to see where Zabel stands up against these ranked 184 pounders.

285     Ryan Allen (UWL) WBD Mike Hayes (UWSP) D 11-8

The spotlight match in this dual was at 174 lbs.  Stevens Point had 4th ranked 3x All-American senior Cody Koenig, while La Crosse sent freshmen standout Josh Chelf out on the mat.  It was a barnburner.  The match went into overtime, and Josh fell short by getting taken down to lose the match with a score of 6-4.  Chelf and Koenig will probably meet again this year, at least once.  It is great to have this type of competition within the Wisconsin Conference.

The last time we matched up with Luther was on January 7.  That dual came down to the last match, and unfortunately we lost by a score of 21-17.  This time the dual meet went to the Eagles in a hard fought battle.

The meet started out with Luther winning two out of the first three matches.  UWL was trailing 3-8 going into the 149 lb. match.  This was the same scenario that had happened the last time we wrestled.  A key match in this dual would be at 149 as Jake Larson defeated 2nd ranked All-American, Matt Pyle.  The last time they met, Pyle ended up winning by a score of 10-7.  That was a good match, and this turned out to be a great match as well, win or lose.  All three periods were a battle of shots, reshots, hand fighting, and positioning.  Both benches were on their feet watching this one.  The score was tied 1-1 after regulation time, which meant overtime.  Jake hit a beautiful snatch single to take Pyle down.  Our bench was fired up.  The team score was now 6-8.

The next match would be Ross Needham against All-American Ryan Lebeau.  In the first period, Ross was battling hard with Lebeau by taking relentless shots, one after another.  Ross got caught with a counter on one of his attempts and ended up in a precarious position on his back.  The referee slapped the mat and ended what was shaping up to be a great match.  This fired up the bench once again.  Usually when one of your leader’s loses, it has a negative effect on the team, but we battled on.  The team score was now 6-14.

Hard nosed Scott Dorn was up next against the #1 ranked wrestler Garrett South.  Dorn lost 6-0 but fought hard and gave South all that he could handle.  The team score was now is 6-17.

This is where the four-match winning streak occurred for UWL.  Freshman standout Josh Zabel began the run with a major decision against Luther’s AJ Gregg 8-0, thus making the score 10-17.

In the next match, La Crosse bumped up 6th ranked 174 lb. Josh Chelf against 3rd ranked 184 lb. Danny Adams.  Last time they met, Chelf ended up beating Adams by a score of 6-3.  This time, Josh won the match in dramatic fashion by taking Adams down in overtime for the victory.  It was a tough match to win.  Josh is about 5’ 8” and Adams is over 6 feet.  It is amazing how Josh defended the long reach of Adams.  The team score was now 13-17.

Jim Swanson was back in the line up for La Crosse.  This made a huge difference as he went out and pinned a tough opponent in Luther’s formerly 3rd ranked wrestler, Wyatt Reyerson.  With Swanson pinning Reyerson and Allen getting a fall at heavyweight, the Eagles won the meet by a 25-17 margin.  Both falls occurred in the first period, making the end of the meet seem like a blur of excitement and explosive wrestling.

The La Crosse/Luther match-up is always a good challenge for both teams, as both teams highly respect each other.  Luther has strong ties with La Crosse in that their core coaching staff are all from UW-La Crosse.  1992 grad and All-American Dave Mitchell is Luther’s head wrestling coach.  Head assistant and 1995 UWL grad Jeff Ogara was a 4x All-American for the Eagles.  Former La Crosse coach (1992-98) Greg Lonning is also helping out with the Luther team.  Now in charge of the La Crosse wrestling squad is Head Coach Nate Skaar, an All-American and 1997 graduate from Luther College.  What a connection -- two great wrestling schools with such close ties.  Both programs feed off each other and just get better by wrestling each other a few times each year.  In addition, both programs support each other.  The friendship between the two coaching staffs is very unique, strong, and will always be there.
