Duals presented by Hershey's SmartZone
Friday and Saturday,
January 20-21, 2005
The young but hard-nosed UW-La Crosse wrestling team
had fun competing at the National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio this past
weekend. We put on a great show for the fans out East. It was another
strong showing by the Eagles, going 4-1. Their hard work paid off in the
end with the team bringing home a 3rd place finish. The team
is currently ranked 4th in the country with an overall record
of 17-4. Augsburg won the show by defeating Wartburg in the finals in a
close meet.
The UWL team wrestled well and many guys turned the
corner this past weekend. Throughout the two-day tournament, we had many
exciting matches and every dual was a good challenge. As coaches, we were
very pleased to see some improvements throughout the lineup. These duals
set the foundation for the rest of the season, and the guys can now focus
on bringing home a NCAA trophy this year.
The UWL wrestlers who competed this past weekend

The key match here was at 133 lbs. Delaware Valley’s
2nd ranked senior Barry Wise defeated freshman standout Mike Rohowitz in
overtime 8-6. This was such a great match to watch and it was a great
measuring stick for Mike to see how he could wrestle against a seasoned
All-American.
Another good match was at 174 lbs. Formerly unranked
freshman Josh Chelf defeated All-American senior Jason Shivak by a score
of 6-5. Chelf is currently ranked 6th in the country after
this showing. This was a great test for Josh. He was taken down in the
first period but was then able to control the action in the last two
periods.
At 184 lbs, Delaware Valley’s 5th ranked
senior Andrew Helms defeated freshman standout Josh Zabel in a close 5-3
match. This was also a good measuring stick for the coaches to see where
Zabel stands up against these ranked 184 pounders.

The spotlight match in this
dual was at 174 lbs. Stevens Point had 4th ranked 3x
All-American senior Cody Koenig, while La Crosse sent freshmen standout
Josh Chelf out on the mat. It was a barnburner. The match went into
overtime, and Josh fell short by getting taken down to lose the match with
a score of 6-4. Chelf and Koenig will probably meet again this year, at
least once. It is great to have this type of competition within the
Wisconsin Conference.

The last time we matched up with Luther was on
January 7. That dual came down to the last match, and unfortunately we
lost by a score of 21-17. This time the dual meet went to the Eagles in a
hard fought battle.
The meet started out with Luther winning two out of
the first three matches. UWL was trailing 3-8 going into the 149 lb.
match. This was the same scenario that had happened the last time we
wrestled. A key match in this dual would be at 149 as Jake Larson
defeated 2nd ranked All-American, Matt Pyle. The last time
they met, Pyle ended up winning by a score of 10-7. That was a good
match, and this turned out to be a great match as well, win or lose. All
three periods were a battle of shots, reshots, hand fighting, and
positioning. Both benches were on their feet watching this one. The
score was tied 1-1 after regulation time, which meant overtime. Jake hit
a beautiful snatch single to take Pyle down. Our bench was fired up. The
team score was now 6-8.
The next match would be Ross Needham against
All-American Ryan Lebeau. In the first period, Ross was battling hard
with Lebeau by taking relentless shots, one after another. Ross got
caught with a counter on one of his attempts and ended up in a precarious
position on his back. The referee slapped the mat and ended what was
shaping up to be a great match. This fired up the bench once again.
Usually when one of your leader’s loses, it has a negative effect on the
team, but we battled on. The team score was now 6-14.
Hard nosed Scott Dorn was up next against the #1
ranked wrestler Garrett South. Dorn lost 6-0 but fought hard and gave
South all that he could handle. The team score was now is 6-17.
This is where the four-match winning streak occurred
for UWL. Freshman standout Josh Zabel began the run with a major decision
against Luther’s AJ Gregg 8-0, thus making the score 10-17.
In the next match, La Crosse bumped up 6th
ranked 174 lb. Josh Chelf against 3rd ranked 184 lb. Danny
Adams. Last time they met, Chelf ended up beating Adams by a score of
6-3. This time, Josh won the match in dramatic fashion by taking Adams
down in overtime for the victory. It was a tough match to win. Josh is
about 5’ 8” and Adams is over 6 feet. It is amazing how Josh defended the
long reach of Adams. The team score was now 13-17.
Jim Swanson was back in the line up for La Crosse.
This made a huge difference as he went out and pinned a tough opponent in
Luther’s formerly 3rd ranked wrestler, Wyatt Reyerson. With
Swanson pinning Reyerson and Allen getting a fall at heavyweight, the
Eagles won the meet by a 25-17 margin. Both falls occurred in the first
period, making the end of the meet seem like a blur of excitement and
explosive wrestling.
The La Crosse/Luther match-up is always a good
challenge for both teams, as both teams highly respect each other. Luther
has strong ties with La Crosse in that their core coaching staff are all
from UW-La Crosse. 1992 grad and All-American Dave Mitchell is Luther’s
head wrestling coach. Head assistant and 1995 UWL grad Jeff Ogara was a
4x All-American for the Eagles. Former La Crosse coach (1992-98) Greg
Lonning is also helping out with the Luther team. Now in charge of the La
Crosse wrestling squad is Head Coach Nate Skaar, an All-American and 1997
graduate from Luther College. What a connection -- two great wrestling
schools with such close ties. Both programs feed off each other and just
get better by wrestling each other a few times each year. In addition,
both programs support each other. The friendship between the two coaching
staffs is very unique, strong, and will always be there.
