A moment with the Coach
"Time out with UW Badger Coach Barry Davis"
2008-2009 Number 1
Season Preview November 2008
Wisconsin Wrestling Online: Are the wrestle-offs that took
place last Saturday final for those weight classes?
Coach Davis: Yes – four of the five are final.
125 – Drew Hammen
141 – Zach Tanelli
149 – Kyle Ruschell
157 – Ben Jordan
We have not determined the 133 weight class yet. Tyler Graff decisioned
Eric Senescu, but we will not know if we will pull Tyler from
red-shirting until after the next three weekends as he will be competing
at open tourneys. We will evaluate after that and make our decision.
Wisconsin Wrestling Online: What about the rest of the line up?
Coach Davis: 165 – Andrew Howe
174 – Undecided – either Mike Felling or Travis Rutt. They have not
wrestled off yet. Felling will be competing at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge
on November 15th in North Carolina and Travis Rutt will be competing at
the open tourneys. After that we will either make our determination
based on their performances or we will have a true wrestle-off.
184 – Eric Bugenhagen
197 – Dallas Herbst
Hwt – Kyle Massey
Wisconsin Wrestling Online: What about Brandvold?
Coach Davis: Right now Trevor is certified at 184 but
will compete at 197 lbs. at open events. We will evaluate how he handles
the bigger weight class and from there will either have him cut to 184
this season or have him redshirt and go 197 the following year.
Wisconsin Wrestling Online: Wow. A lot of decisions to be made
yet in the line up.
Coach Davis: That’s right. But as a staff we don’t want
to make any rush decisions – we want to do what’s best for each
individual and for the team.
Wisconsin Wrestling Online: Any other ideas you are
thinking about on red-shirts and non-red shirts?
Coach Davis: Yes. We thought Kelliher would be at 125,
but he has grown out of that weight class and will go to 133. So if we
do decide to redshirt Graff, it will be between Senescu and Kelliher.
Wisconsin Wrestling Online: What do you think of wrestling your
first home dual meet this year at the Kohl Center vs. Iowa State on
November 21st.
Coach Davis: It’s great! We are excited about it. That is our
Kids day – so anyone under 18 gets in free. We hope we get a big crowd
to come out and cheer the team on.
Wisconsin Wrestling Online: Do you want to talk about this
dual?
Coach Davis: Not quite yet. We have to get thru the
ACC/Big Ten Challenge first and then we will give you an update. |
