A moment with the Coach: Time out with Coach Davis

Second in a Series

...be mentally ready for every match...
(Thursday, February 1, 2007)

Badger Head Wrestling Coach Barry Davis sent the following comments for Wisconsin Wrestling Online:

Last week was an emotional week for the Badger Wrestlers. We wrestled at Northwestern on Friday evening and lost 19-18.
But the team came back the next day to do something that has not been done in over 42 years – they defeated Iowa 21-14!
We were able to learn a very valuable lesson from these two duals.

We realized how important it is to be mentally ready for every match.

You cannot overlook one individual and focus on another. I felt Zach Tanelli overlooked and dismissed one non-ranked opponent (Northwestern) and lost, but came back the the next evening and scored 7 straight points in the third period to defeat #15 ranked Galanakis from Iowa.

It will be very important this weekend for each athlete to mentally wrestle one match at a time and perform to the best of their ability in order to defeat our opponents (Purdue & Michigan). We have to continue this trend throughout the rest of the season. It is that one extra degree of focus and mental preparation that will get the job done.
