Herbst Takes Sixth, Massey Places Eighth at NCAAs
ST. LOUIS, Mo.
The University of Wisconsin wrestling team wrapped up competition at
the
2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships Saturday morning in St. Louis, Mo.
Wisconsin had two grapplers still competing at the Scottrade Center
Saturday morning and they both finished in the top eight of their
respective weight classes. Junior Dallas Herbst placed sixth at 197
lbs.
while junior Kyle Massey finished eighth at heavyweight.
Both wrestlers earned their first All-American honor for finishing
in
the top eight of their respective weight classes. Wisconsin now has
55
All-Americans in school history and 17 have come during head coach
Barry
Davis’s 14-year tenure with the Badgers. Massey is the fifth
All-American heavyweight in UW history and Herbst joins Ryan
Flaherty
(2004) as just the second Badger All-American at 197 lbs. Herbst’s
sixth
place finish is the highest of any UW 197 lbs. wrestler in school
history.
Herbst, the No. 6 seed, took on two tough opponents this morning. He
first faced the No. 8 seed Craig Brester from Nebraska. Brester
scored
four points in the first period and never looked back in a 9-2
decision.
Herbst then fought for fifth place against the No. 1 seed, Josh
Glenn
from American. Glenn also got out to a quick start, scoring six
points
in the first period. Herbst responded though and pulled within three
in
the second at 6-3 but Glenn would hold on for the 11-6 win.
Herbst finishes his junior season at 31-7 and had 16 pins, which is
third most in a single season for UW wrestlers. Next season, he will
need just one more pin to tie Lee Kemp’s career record of 47 pins.
Massey was supposed to face No. 8 seeded Bubba Gritter from Central
Michigan in the seventh place match. Gritter won by injury default
and
took seventh while Massey earned his first All-American honor by
finishing eighth. Massey went 3-3 at the NCAA Championships and
totaled
a 30-10 overall record this season.

Consolation Round
ST. LOUIS, Mo.
The University of Wisconsin added two more names to its list of
All-American wrestlers Friday night. Juniors Dallas Herbst and Kyle
Massey each earned their first All-American honor and became the
54th
and 55th wrestlers in UW history to win the award. Herbst and Massey
are
also the 16th and 17th All-Americans during head coach Barry Davis’s
tenure.
Both are still competing at the 2008 NCAA Championship in St. Louis,
Mo., and are in the hunt for top-eight finishes in their respective
weight classes. Herbst, Wisconsin’s 197 lbs. wrestler, can finish no
worse than sixth, while Massey, the heavyweight, will place either
seventh or eighth. Eighth place is the cutoff point for
All-American.
Massey, the No. 6 seed, earned his All-American award by defeating
No.
12 seeded Mark Ellis from Missouri. Massey led 1-0 for most of the
match
but midway through the third period, Ellis took the 2-1 lead. Massey
then retaliated with 30 seconds left and went up 3-2. He then kept
Ellis
down for the remainder of the bout and captured the 3-2 decision.
With the win, Massey moved on and faced No. 7 seeded David Zabriskie
from Iowa State. Zabriskie got out to a quick 2-1 lead before he
took
injury timeout. Despite his injury, he stormed back to score five
more
points and defeat Massey, 7-2. Massey now fights for seventh place
against No. 8 seed Ryan Gritter from Central Michigan.
Massey is the first UW heavyweight to earn All-American honors since
1996 when Jeff Walter won the NCAA title for the weight class.
Massey
also becomes the fifth UW All-American heavyweight in school
history.
Herbst is now just the second 197 lbs. Badger wrestler to be named
All-American. He joins Ryan Flaherty, who won the award after an
eighth
place finish in 2004. Herbst wrestled in the semifinals tonight
against
No. 2 seed Phil Davis from Penn State. Davis stormed out to a 5-0
lead
in the second and hung on for the 6-0 win. Despite the loss, Herbst
will
now take on No. 8 seed Craig Brester from Nebraska en route to third
place.
Herbst and Massey return to action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
inside
the Scottrade Center. ESPNU and ESPN360.com will continue its
coverage
tomorrow and the Wrestling Blog will also follow all the Badger
action.

Herbst earned a spot in the semifinals after winning his
quarterfinal
bout against David Bertolino from Iowa State. Herbst, the No. 6
seed,
defeated Bertolino for the second time this season and did so with a
5-4
score. Herbst moves onto the semifinals and will face No. 2 seed and
Big
Ten Champion at 197 lbs., Phil Davis from Penn State. Herbst is 1-2
all-time against Davis.
Junior Kyle Massey is also still alive in the wrestlebacks. He lost
his
quarterfinal match to No. 3 seed Ed Prendergast (9-3) but is still
wrestling and will meet No. 12 seed Mark Ellis from Missouri.
Three other UW grapplers competed this morning but are now out of
the
tournament after losing bouts.
Sophomore Trevor Brandvold won his first wrestleback match this
morning.
He defeated Jacob Devlin from Air Force by a 15-0 tech fall that
came in
5:00. He then advanced and met No. 12 seed Jack Jensen from Oklahoma
State in his second match of the day but fell in a 5-0 decision.
Brandvold went 2-2 at this year’s NCAAs and finishes his sophomore
season 21-14 overall.

Hofstra and his streak was broken as Ruggirello pinned Tanelli in
1:25.
Tanelli ends his junior season at 28-12 overall.
Sophomore Kyle Ruschell, the No. 7 seed at 141 lbs., met Chris
Drouin
from Arizona State in his wrestleback match and despite a close
score,
lost, 7-5. It was Ruschell’s final bout of the season and the
tri-captain ends his second year at Wisconsin with a 26-8 overall
record.

Badgers Complete Day One of NCAA Championships
ST. LOUIS, Mo.
The University of Wisconsin wrestling team completed the first day
of
competition at the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Wisconsin won
four
matches in Session II and is in 11th place with 17 points. Juniors
Dallas Herbst and Kyle Massey are still in search of a national
title
while three others are in the hunt for third place.

Junior Zach Tanelli, the No. 9 seed, came out strong for Wisconsin
and
scored eight points in the first period against Borislav Novachkov
from
Cal Poly in the pigtail round at 133 lbs. Both wrestlers lost their
first-round matches and Tanelli emerged the eventual 11-0 winner and
accumulated over four minutes of riding time in the win. Tanelli
then
moved on to face Jeffery Schell from Brown. Despite a close match,
Tanelli kept Schell on his back in the closing seconds of the match
for
the 6-3 win. Tanelli is still en route to third place and will take
on
Ryan Dunn from Oregon.
Herbst got the second win of the night Wisconsin and his second pin
of
the day. Herbst pinned No. 11 seed Timothy Morrison from Rider in
just
52 seconds. It was his 16th pin this season, which is third most in
a
single season for any UW wrestler, and is now just one away from
tying
Lee Kemps’s school record of 47 pins. Herbst pinned his first two
opponents of NCAAs in a total time of 1:17. He moves on to face
unseeded
David Bertolino from Iowa State. Bertolino knocked off the No. 3
seeded
Mike Tamillow from Northwestern. Bertolino and Herbst met once
already
this season with Herbst winning by a fall in 4:34.
Massey is also still in the hunt for an NCAA title. He defeated the
No.
11 seed, Michael Spaid from Bloomsburg, 4-3 in his second match of
the
day. Massey moves on and will face the No. 3 seed, Ed Prendergast
from Navy.
Sophomore Kyle Ruschell wrestled one of the closest matches of the
evening, one that went on for more than nine minutes before a winner
was
determined. Ruschell and Matt Kyler from Army had a 3-3 tie after
regulation but Kyler scored with a takedown as time expired in the
second sudden victory to take the 5-3 decision and bump Ruschell,
the
No. 7 seed, to the wrestleback round. Ruschell will take on Chris
Droulin from Arizona State.
Sophomore Trevor Brandvold also got bumped from the championship
round
and lost a close 6-3 decision to No. 4 seed Christian Simnott.
Brandvold
was within one point at 4-3 down the stretch but Simnott scored
three
points in the final seconds for the win. Brandvold now moves to the
wrestleback round and will meet Jacob Devlin from Air Force.
Despite the five Badgers that are still wrestling tomorrow, three
seniors saw the end of their careers come Thursday night. Senior
Collin
Cudd, a four-time NCAA qualifier faced Eric Morrill from Edinboro in
the
wrestlebacks at 125 lbs. Cudd battled through injury but could not
hold
on and was pinned in 5:38. He ends his final season at Wisconsin
with a
20-12 record and leaves with a 71-56 overall record.
Jake Donar also fought hard in his bout at 165 lbs. against Luke
Manuel
but came up short. Manuel emerged the 6-5 winner and advances while
Donar leaves Wisconsin as a two-time NCAA qualifier and was 48-58
overall.
Finally, Dan Clum met Tyler French from Air Force in the
wrestlebacks at
174 lbs. Clum also lost a close one-point decision and dropped 7-6
to
French. This was Clum’s only year as a starter for Wisconsin and he
leaves with an 8-13 overall record.
Wisconsin returns to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Scottrade
Center
for the quarterfinal rounds and more wrestleback matches. ESPNU
begins
its broadcast tomorrow at 10 a.m.
www.UWBadgers.com will also continue
