Muskies finish
16th at Wheaton Invitational

Lakeland finished with 35 points taking 16th place at the "Pete
Wilson" Wheaton Invitational on Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan.
27 in Wheaton, Ill.
Mark VandenHoogen (285), Paul Hartt (184) and David Copp (125) all
finished in the top eight of their divisions to pace the Muskies.
VandenHoogen was the top wrestler for the Muskies with a fifth place
finish in the 285 division. He got things underway with an 11-3 win
over Wabash's Rob Arnett. In the quarterfinals, VandenHoogen
defeated Dawud
Wilson of Case Western Reserve 3-2. In the semifinals, VandenHoogen
was defeated by the number one seed Jose Navarro of the University
of Indianapolis 3-1. The loss sent him into a bracket to determine
fifth place where VandenHoogen defeated Derrick Johnson of
UW-Whitewater 7-0.
In 184 division action, Paul Hartt finished seventh. He lost his
first match of the invite to MSOE's Matt Olsen 10-7. In the
consolation bracket, Hartt pinned Wheaton's Lars Skoglund 3:51 into
their match. Hartt then won on technical fall over Justin Lucas of
the University of Chicago 5:43 into the match and took out the
number six seed Louis Posa of Tri-State University 4-0 in the
consolation bracket. However, in the
next match Hartt was pinned by Ryan Summers of John Carroll 3:22
into the consolation bracket semifinal match. Hartt then got a
rematch with Olsen who beat him in the opening round. This time
Hartt would come out
on top with an 8-3 win to take seventh place in the division.
In the 125 division, David Copp finish eighth overall. In his
opening match, Copp was pinned by John Fleming of the University of
Indianapolis at 4:15. Copp moved onto the consolation bracket where
he won on a
forfeit over Zachary Matayoshi of the University of Chicago. In his
next consolation match he defeated Clemens Artmann of Heidelberg
College 5-2. However he lost in the next round to David Penny of
Northern Ohio 9-3.
He then was pinned by Dan Crowley of Concordia Wisconsin in 1:10 to
come out with the eighth place finish.
UW-LaCrosse took home the team title with 146.5 points
The Muskies will be in action at UW-Eau Claire next weekend.
Lakeland will face the Blugold's in a dual on Friday, Feb. 2nd at 7
p.m. and then participate in the Blugold Invitational on Saturday,
Feb. 3 at 9 a.m.

Six Lakeland wrestlers took home victories as the Muskies defeated
Concordia University, Wis., 24-16, on Thursday night in Mequon.
Freshman Adam Sutter was the first of the Muskies to get on the
board when he pinned Concordia' s Clayton Neske 2:40 into the their
285 division match.
Sophomore David Copp picked up win number two for the Muskies in 125
division action. Copp won a 9-4 decision over the Falcon's Dan
Crowley.
In the 141 division, sophomore Kory Theil defeated the Falcon's
Anthony Myers, 8-5.
Sophomore Cody Klopp picked up the Muskies second pin of the day,
pinning the Falcon's Pete Geelan 3:18 into the 165 division match.
In 174 division action, Muskies' Junior Calvin O' Neal defeated
Steve McCullough 15-10, while junior Paul Hartt took a 5-0 decision
over Adam Schultz in the 174 division.
Next up for the Muskies will be a road trip to UW-Oshkosh to take on
UW-Whitewater and Harper College on Wednesday, Jan. 17. The meet is
scheduled for 5 p.m.

Lakeland goes
2-1 at Knox Duals 1/6/2007
Lakeland finished with a 2-1 record to earn fourth place at the
Chuck Porter Duals hosted by Knox College on Saturday in Galesburg,
Ill.
The Muskies opened the duals with a with a 35-3 loss to 21st ranked
Elmhurst College. Lakeland then rebounded to pick a 41-16 win over
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and a 38-15 victory over host
Knox College.
Individually, junior Paul Hartt (184) was the lone Muskie to go 3-0
for the day, while freshman Clint Harbord (133), sophomore Kory
Theil (141), freshman Jacob Frias (149) and sophomore Jonas Flok
(157) all went 2-1.
Hartt was the only Muskie to pick up a win against Elmhurst in the
opening round, defeating Greg Horn 11-6. In the second round, Hartt
defeated Greg Williams of Rose-Hulman by technical fall 17-2. Hartt
put an exclamation mark on the day when he pinned Martin Dertz of
Knox College just 41 seconds into the match.
Harbord lost his match in the 133 division to Elmhurst's Brian
Ranger, 6-4. The freshman then came back for two wins in a row,
first winning on a forfeit by Rose-Hulman and then defeating Knox
College's Tim Yee by technical fall 18-2.
In the 141 division, Theil opened with a loss to Elmhurst's Kenny
Thomas 10-2. The sophomore won his next two matches against
Rose-Hulman and Knox College on forfeits.
Frias opened his 149 division match with a loss to Elmhurst's Jeff
Kastel, 13-5. In his second match, freshman pinned Rose-Hulman's
Anthony Finigan at five minutes for a victory. He then took down
Knox College's Josh Franklin 8-4, in the Muskies last dual of the
day.
In the 157 division, Flok fell to Elmhurst's Kyle Katz 10-8. The
sophomore rebounded from the loss with two major victories. He
pinned Rose-Hulman's David Schluneker at 5:48 and turned around to
pin Knox College's Grant Guimond at 1:48.
Frias, Hartt and freshman Adam Sutter (285) also won exhibition
matches.
The Muskies will return to action at Concordia-University-Wisconsin
on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.

Lakeland Takes Fourth at Mount Union Duals
on Saturday

Lakeland wrestled to a fourth place finish at the Mount Union Duals
on Saturday in Alliance, Ohio.
The Muskies opened the duals with a 30-14 win over Mount Union.
Lakeland would not be as fortunate in the next two rounds falling to
Grand Valley State University 30-14 and Belmont Abby 24-20. Olivet
College went 3-0 to win the duals.
Individually, junior Paul Hartt (184) and senior Mark Vanden hoogen
(HWT) would be the only Muskies to go 3-0 on the day. Sophomore
David Copp (125), freshman Jacob Frias (149) and sophomore Jonas
Flok (157) all went 2-1 at the meet.
Hartt opened with a 14-4 win over Mount Union's Lange and then took
down GVSU's Lanni, 12-1. In his final match of the day, the Muskie
pinned Belmont Abby's Cruz two minutes into the match.
Vanden Hoogen scored two pins in the heavyweight division. The
senior pinned Mount Union's Ellis at 2:13 and Belmont Abby's Scales
in two minutes. He also won his match against GVSU on a forfeit.
In the 125 division, Copp scored two straight wins before falling in
his last match-up. The sophomore took down Mount Union's Johnson,
23-8 on a technical fall and then Donovan of GVSU 22-9. He fell in
his final match to Belmont Abby's C. Neidermeir, 6-2.
Frias also had a couple of victories in the 149 division. The
freshman defeated Mount Union's Loeffler 9-7, before getting pinned
by Grand Valley State's Eisen just under four minutes in. Frias
bounced back though and stomped Belmont Abby's Bates, 18-2.
Flok was solid in the 157 division. The sophomore opened the duals
with victory, pinning Mount Union's Manypenny at 3:49. Flok would
then fall to GVSU's Correll 11-7, but came back for a 6-3 defeat of
Belmont Abby's Philips.
The Muskies will return to action at the Knox Duals on Saturday,
Jan. 6, in Galesburg, Illinois.

Lakeland Goes 1-1 at
Home Meet Athletics - 12/9/2006
The Lakeland Muskies finished with a 1-1 record in a triangular meet
with MSOE and UW-Oshkosh in Sheboygan, Wis., on Saturday. The
Muskies defeated MSOE 29-15, while losing to 30th nationally-ranked
UW-Oshkosh 21-18.
"There were some close battles," said head coach Pete Rogers. "Some
of the young guys really stepped up today to bring themselves to a
new
level. It just seemed like every close match we were one move away
from a win."
Sophomore David Copp, junior Paul Hartt and sophomore Jonas Flok all
went 2-0 for the day.
Lakeland started the day with the win over MSOE 29-15 that saw the
Muskies win six of four matches. Copp defeated Chris Jackson, 14-7
in
the 125 division. In the 157 division, Flok defeated Joel Vandeboom
13-12 in a close match. Sophomore Cody Klopp pinned Ryan Baird 1:02
into the match for a victory in the 165 weight class. Hartt took
down John Lemmer 9-5 in 184 action. Freshman Clint Harbord (133) and
senior Mark VandenHoogen (HWT) both scored wins on forfeits.
The Muskies battled with UW-Oshkosh in a close 28-22 match, but the
Titans came out on top. Copp picked up his second victory in the 125
division with a 14-7 win over Chris Stratton, while sophomore Korey
Theil defeated Derek Koenig 7-2 in the 141 division. Freshman Jake
Frias picked up a win defeating Paul Gretzinger 8-1 in the 149
weight class. Flok pinned Dallas Moe at 1:14 for his second win of
the day in the 157 weight class. Hartt also picked up his second
win, defeating Pat Detmer 8-5. Vanden Hoogen suffered his first loss
of the season to Justin
Schmalfeldt.
Lakeland will return to action on Dec. 16 when they travel to
Alliance, Ohio for the Mount Union Duals.

Muskies Take Third at MSOE Invite (December 2)
The Lakeland Muskies wrestling team took third place, with 68
points, out of eight teams at the MSOE Invitational on Saturday,
Dec. 2. The
Muskies had three wrestlers win the championship at their weight
class in sophomore David Copp (125), junior Paul Hartt (184) and
senior Mark Vanden Hoogen (285).
"Overall I was really proud of the way we wrestled," said Lakeland
head coach Pete Rogers. "We wrestled some tough guys and we walked
away with quite a few wins."
Vanden Hoogen was the number one seed in the heavyweight division
and had two pins in route to the championship. After a bye in the
first
round, he pinned UW-Platteville's Justin Washington in 4:17. In the
semifinals, Vanden Hoogen pinned Joe Rodriquez of UW-Oshkosh 2:46
into
the match to move onto the championship round. For the tournament
title he defeated UW-Platteville's Ryan Rozek with a 5-3 decision.
In
addition, Vanden Hoogen was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler of
the tournament.
"Mark just continues to wrestle great and he is now 10-0 for the
season," said Rogers. "He is the first wrestler since I have been
here
to win the most outstanding wrestler at a tournament."
Copp took
the 125 division with three wins. The number three seed defeated
UW-Oshkosh's Kyle Kleuskens in the quarterfinals on a technical
fall with a 22-7 score six minutes into the match. He routed James
Williamson of Lawrence University 10-4 in the semifinals and then
took
down UW-Platteville's Spencer Peterson 8-3 for the title.
Hartt won three straight matches on his way to the championship in
the 184 weight class. After a bye in the quarterfinals, the number
one seed
defeated Joe Austin of Lawrence University 7-3 in the semis and then
took down UW-Oshkosh's Pat Detmer 7-4 for the championship.
"David and Paul both are now 9-1 and had a great day," said Rogers.
"Neither one had a close match all day. Both have the potential to
get
to the top."
The Muskies had two wrestlers take third place in sophomore Jonas
Flok (157) and freshman Adam Sutter (285). Flok had four pins and
Sutter had three in route to their outstanding performances.
The Muskies will be back in action on Dec. 9 as they take on
UW-Oshkosh and conference foe MSOE at noon. at the Wehr Center.
Lakeland Takes
Down Wheaton 33-13 Thursday November 30
The Lakeland Muskies improved to 3-2 overall with a 33-13
victory over
Wheaton College on Thursday night in Wheaton Ill.
"We did pretty well as a whole" said head coach Pete Rogers. "We had
some close matches and our wrestlers were able to come out on top."
Seven wrestlers picked up wins at the dual. Lakeland senior Mark
Vanden
Hoogen ranked eighth in the nation pinned Chase Campbell in 4:52.
The
pin was his fourth pin in five matches. In the 184 division junior
Paul
Hartt defeated Lars Skoglund on a technical fall 20-3.
"Mark and Paul just continue to keep winning" said Rogers.
Also receiving a pin for Lakeland was sophomore Jonas Flok over
Eugene
Savenok just 4:57 into his match. Freshman Kory Theil had a great
match
as he defeated Chris Rud from Wheaton 6-4. Also wrestling well for
Lakeland was sophomore Cody Klopp who defeated Justin Tomal at the

division 11-7. Sophomore Everett Wood had a decisive win over Dan
Glenn 12-2. Sophomore David Copp also picked a win on forfeit.
The Muskies will travel to Milwaukee for the MSOE on DEC. 2nd before
competing in a dual meet with MSOE and UW-Oshkosh at home on Dec. 9.

Point, the 15th ranked team in the nation, on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at
Lakeland College.
The Muskies would have just two wins on the evening. In the
heavyweight weight class, Lakeland senior Mark Vanden Hoogan
recorded a pin over Bret Oswald in just 53 seconds, to give their
Muskies their first win of the evening. Freshman Jacob Frias,
wrestling at 149, also picked up win defeating the Pointers’ Mo
Malone 5-3.
“Mark and Jacob both were great tonight,” said Lakeland head coach
Pete Rogers. “We are very capable team we just a very young team.”
Sophomores David Copp (125) and Kory Theil (141) also picked up
victories due to forfeits by Stevens Point.
The Muskies will be taking to the road for their next two meets.
Their next dual will be at Augustana and Wheaton in a triangular
meet on Nov. 30. The Muskies will not return home until Dec. 9 when
they host MSOE and UW-Oshkosh.

Lakeland Opens Season 1-2 After Lakeland Duals

The Lakeland College Muskies opened their 2006-07 wrestling season
with the Lakeland Duals on Saturday, Nov. 11. The Muskies went 1-2
defeating Manchester (37-10), while dropping matches to Coe College
(30-7) and University of Wisconsin Platteville (21-20) in very
close, hard fought matches.
"I think competing with such a young team we did well today," said
head coach Pete Rogers. "We lost to UW-Platteville by just a point
and they are ranked 24th in the nation."
On the day senior Mark Vanden Hoogen, wrestling in the heavyweight
weight class, would go 3-0, defeating all three opponents that he
faced. He pinned the fifth-ranked heavyweight in the nation Ryan
Rozek at 3:14 from UW-Platteville, took down Bryan Frush from
Manchester College with a fall at 1:05, and defeated Jared Carder of
Coe College, 13-4.
Junior Paul Hartt would also have a stellar day in his 184 weight
class, going undefeated, 3-0. He pinned Matt Beschta of
UW-Platteville at 3:20, defeated Joe Sherer of Manchester College on
a fall at 3:55 and then beat the fourth ranked 184-wrestler in the
nation Greg Lalla of Coe College, 7-2.
In team action, Lakeland fell to University of
Wisconsin-Platteville, 21-20 in the first round of the day in a very
close match. The Muskies received wins from David Copp (12-1) at the
125 weight class, Clint Harbord (12-2) in the 133 division, Hartt
with at pin in the 184 weight class, and Vanden Hoogen with a pin at
heavy weight.
The Muskies record would improve to 1-1 with a victory over
Manchester College 37-10 in the second round of the day. Copp won
the 125 class via a forfeit, while Harbord would also took the 133
division on a forfeit. Cory Theil took a 9-1 decision at 141, Jake
Frias won (5-3) at 149, Jonas Flok took his match in the 157 weight
class on an opponent fall, Hartt won on a fall by his opponent in
the 184 weight class and Vanden Hoogen took the heavyweight division
with a fall as well.
The Muskies would drop their last match against Coe, 30-7 in the
final round of the day to drop the Muskies overall record to 1-2.
Hartt and Vanden Hoogen would cap off the day as the only Muskies to
go undefeated. Hartt took down his opponent (7-2) in the 184 weight
class and Vanden Hoogen won 13-4.
The Muskies will next be in action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 when they
take on UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. on the Lakeland campus. It will
be the second of five home matches during the season for the
wrestling team.
