Lakeland Wrestlers Defeat UW-Platteville 21-15

Date: Sat 12/10/05 07:53 PM
The Lakeland Muskies wrestling squad improved to 5-4 overall with a 21-15 decision over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday evening. The Muskies started the dual with a forfeit victory for freshman David Copp, but quickly found themselves down 15-6 as they lost their next four matches.

Freshman Cody Klopp wrestling at the 165 weight class was able to get his first victory this season with a 5-4 decision. That match would give the Muskies much needed momentum as they ended up winning five straight matches for the victory.

"It was pretty exciting," said head coach Pete Rogers. "We lost a lot of tight matches at the beginning and I was getting a little nervous. However, Cody Klopp came through with a big victory over a tough wrestler, earning his first victory this season, and from there we just started rolling."

Lakeland received victories from the following wrestlers: Copp (125) forfeit; sophomore Calvin O'Neal (174) 8-3; Klopp (165) 5-4; sophomore Paul Hartt (184) 8-3; senior Lee Sparks (197) 6-4; junior Mark Vanden Hoogen (285) 7-5.

Lakeland Wrestling Notches Second Victory Over State School with 30-10 Victory Over UW-Oshkosh

The Lakeland Muskies improved their record to 2-2 with a decisive 30-10 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, Nov. 16. The win marks the second straight victory over a state school for the Muskies and head coach Pete Rogers’ second victory over a state school in his five seasons at Lakeland.

“It is real exciting to see the guys coming around like they are,” said head coach Pete Rogers. “They got all the preseason jitters out and they have just taken off the way I hoped they would. I am proud of each and everyone one of the guys for how they pulled through tonight.”

In the 184 weight class sophomore Paul Hartt recorded a pin over Alex Sell in just 33 seconds.

“The kid was stronger than me,” said Hartt. “I took him down and got on top of him and turned him.”

Freshman Jonas Flok, wrestling at 157, recorded a pin against Matt Kehone in 1:18 in his first varsity match for the Muskies.

“Flok, as a freshman just went out and pinned a senior in his weight class,” said Rogers. “He just came out ready to wrestle. It was amazing to see.”

Freshman David Copp got things started on the evening for the Muskies as he defeated Chris Truemper 11-4 in the 125 division to open the dual. Other winners for the Muskies was freshman Casey Klister (133) via a forfeit; sophomore Calvin O’Neal (174) defeated Adam Dorner 7-5; senior Tim Vallier beat Pat Detmar 8-4 at the 197 division and junior Mark Vanden Hooge won the heavy weight division with a 6-5 decision.

The Muskies came into the season with high expectations and while it has only been four duals so far, the Muskies are extremely proud of the way they have been wrestling.

“We owe it to Pete, for getting this recruiting class,” said Hartt. “They all came here for him. He pushes us and gets us to win. Overcoming these two state school’s really helps our confidence and helps prepare us for the conference tournament. Overall, these past four duals will help us for the weeks to come.”

The Muskies will be taking to the road for their next three meets. Their next dual will be at UW-Whitewater on November, 22. The Muskies will not return home until Dec. 6 when they host Maranatha Baptist for the second LMC dual of the season.

“Going on the road is a change,” said Rogers. “I think we need to go out on the road and wrestle the exact same way we would here. I mean it is a different situation, but it is still a wrestling mat. I think we have some diehard fans here that will follow us around so hopefully the home court advantage won’t be too much of a difference.”

“I think competing with such a young team we did well today,” said head coach Pete Rogers. “We were up against juniors and seniors and we had a couple of injuries in the lineup today. I am really amazed with how we wrestled and I think it will only get better for us. We didn’t do all of the things that we needed to right, but it is the first match of the season and we can work on things. I am extremely excited about how we did today.”

On the day sophomore Calvin O’Neal, wrestling in the 174 weight class, would go 3-0 defeating all three opponents that he faced. He defeated freshman Kyle Kehru from Cornell (12-4), freshman Jon Erichsen (8-3) from UW-Eau Claire and sophomore Ben Ragowski (14-5) from Manchester

“Calvin O’Neal just wrestled a phenomena day,” said Rogers. “He did not have a close match. I don’t know how many takedowns he had, but he dominated everyone he wrestled.”

The Klister brothers, freshmen Casey and Chris, wrestled well for their first ever college matches as they both went 2-1 on the day. Casey Klister defeated sophomore Greg Murphy (8-2) from Cornell and freshman Andy Miller from UW-Eau Claire via a pin in the 133 weight class. He dropped his third and final match of the day to junior John Sheets from Manchester via a pin.

Against UW-Eau Claire, Chris defeated freshman Dustin Follen (4-0) and took a 4-3 decision from senior Joe Lampiot of Manchester.

Lakeland fell to Cornell, 25-14 in the first round of the day. Cornell had just defeated Simpson College, one of the top wrestling programs in D-III, coming into today’s match. The Muskies received wins from Casey Klister (8-2) at the 133 weight class, O’Neal (12-4) at 174, sophomore Paul Hartt (10-4) at the 184 class and junior Matt Benson (13-5) at heavy weight.

The Muskies record would improve to 1-1 with a victory over UW-Eau Claire 27-19 in the second round of the day. Freshman David Copp won the 125 class via a forfeit, while the Klister brothers won at the 133 and 141 division. Freshman Mitch Nooyen took a 5-2 decision at 157, while O’Neal (8-3) and sophomore Paul Hartt (pin) won at the 174 and 184 classes respectively.

The Muskies would drop their match against Manchester 34-10 in the final round of the day to drop the Muskies overall record to 1-2. Chris Klister would take the 141 division with a 4-3 decision, while junior Matt Priemesbeger won 5-4 at the 149 class. O’Neal was the only other wrestler to win against Manchester for Lakeland with a 14-5 decision at the 174 level.

Lakeland Wrestling Defeats Concordia 26-16 on Senior Night

The Lakeland Muskies improved to 2-1 in the Lake Michigan Conference and 11-8 overall with a 26-16 victory over Concordia University – Wisconsin on Thursday night.

“We did pretty good as a whole,” said head coach Pete Rogers. “We wrestled tough, we wrestled hard every single match. It got a little scary there and it is kind of tough competing when you’re missing a couple weight classes like we were. We managed to pull it together and we did pretty well.”

On senior night the Muskies were lead by seniors Tim Vallier and Lee Sparks who both recorded victories in their respective weight classes. Vallier defeated Ryan 13-5 in the 174 division, while Sparks took out Torie Ruffin 11-6 in the 197 division.

“I can tell both of them (Vallier and Sparks) were letting tonight weigh a little heavy on their mind,” said Rogers. “They were both a little more focused and less talkative tonight than in times past. It is exciting to see them. It is amazing that they aren’t going to be here next year. They have been with me since I have basically started coaching and it is going to be different without those two guys. They definitely made an impact on me and the team.”

Vallier talked about what it meant to wrestle in his last home match at Lakeland.

“This is a dream for me to come in as a freshman with only four or five guys on the team,” said Vallier. “To come in this year as a senior we have a full line-up and are hanging with the top teams in the nation. It has been a dream come true. However, the credit goes to Pete (Rogers) for believing in us, bringing us in to wrestle here and building the program to where it is today.”

Freshman Jonas Flok had a great match as he pinned Brandon Werner from Concordia just 2:14 seconds into the match. Also wrestling well for Lakeland was freshman Cody Klopp who defeated Ryan Gehringer at the 165 division.

“It is a big win for us as a conference win,” said Vallier. “I am glad to see the kids come out and perform well. Especially the younger kids like Jonas (Flok) and Cody (Klopp).
