Expectations continue to rise for Lakeland program
College wrestling: Expectations continue to rise
for Lakeland program
Special to The Press • November 9, 2009
Each year, the bar is raised higher and higher for the Lakeland
wrestling program. As a result, expectations are lofty for the
2009-10 team.
One year after placing 21st at the NCAA Division III National
Championships and sending two national qualifiers to Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, ninth-year coach Pete Rogers is looking for his team to
continue to increase the standard of success at Lakeland.
"I think this team is really close-knit right now, and has high
goals in mind," said Rogers. "I feel like we should be taking
another step in the right direction. No one in our program is
satisfied with being 21st in the nation. Being content with a top-30
finish is not where we want to go."
One way to set a higher standard is to compete against the best. The
Muskies, who were 9-7 in dual meets last season and are the two-time
defending Northern Wrestling Association (NWA) champions, will face
five opponents in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches
Association (NWCA) Division III Preseason rankings.
Depth will be a key to the Muskies' push this year. Rogers believes
he has extremely capable back-ups who can step in for an injured
starter at any moment.
From a leadership standpoint, the team will call on its three
seniors, Ben Chapman, Jake Frias and Adam Sutter. Chapman, of
Plymouth, a two-time NWA champion, won't return to this spot until
the second semester, as he only has one semester of eligibility
remaining.
Sutter, wrestling at 285, became the program's second-ever
All-American last year, placing sixth at the NCAA Championships. He
also finished as the team leader in pins and team points. The
Gladstone, Mich., native is ranked No. 4 in the nation in the
d3wrestle.com Preseason Individual Rankings and fifth in the
Brute-Adidas NWCA Division III Preseason Individual Rankings.
Among the top Muskies: Sophomore Jake Montie (141 pounds), entering
his third year with the program, went 16-8 last year as a back-up
after sitting out the 2007-08 season with a back injury. The Oconto
Falls, Ill., native looks to stay healthy as a starter this season.
Junior Isaac Roberson (Chicago, 149 pounds) finished second on the
team with 123 takedowns and placed sixth at the NCAA Division III
Great Lakes Regional.
Other locals to watch include freshman Ricardo Rosas (141) and
Martin Alvarez (165) of Sheboygan and junior Gary Pieper (184) of
Adell.
