Warhawks Earn Fifth Straight WIAC Championship
The No. 13 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team earned five individual titles en route to its fifth straightWisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference team championship at Sunday’s meet, presented by Culver’s, at UW-Stevens Point.
The Warhawks earned 161.5 points to edge fifth-ranked UW-La Crosse, which totaled 156.
Following competition, head coach Ned Shuck was named WIAC Coach of the Year. The second-year coach has led UW-Whitewater to back-to-back conference championships.
Seniors Matt Adcock, Tom Gerszewski, sophomore Isaiah Vela, freshmen Brandon Arteaga and Nicholas Bonomo each recorded individual championships.
Adcock downed two nationally-ranked opponents en route to his first career league title at 141 pounds. The two-time All-American defeated sixth-ranked Jared Kust
of UW-Stevens Point in the semifinals and earned a 6-3 decision over No. 4 Cody See of UW-La Crosse in the final.
At 165, Gerszewski claimed his second championship, defeating No. 9 Logan Hermsen of UW-Stevens Point by a major decision in the title bout.
Vela registered two pins, one major decision and one technical fall at 149 pounds, while Arteaga collected two technical falls and a majordecision at 157.
Bonomo provided one of UW-Whitewater’s top moments of the meet, pinning UW-La Crosse’s Alex Friedman in the final at 184 for his third fall of the meet.
Senior Kory Jauch, juniors Joseph Brodman and Zac Denny finished as runners-up at 157, 133 and 125 pounds, respectively. Denny’s day included a 9-7 decision over
No. 1 ranked Ryan Weinmann of UW-La Crosse.
The Warhawks continue postseason action Feb. 27 at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship at Wabash (Ind.) College. UW-Whitewater seeks its fourth consecutive
regional title.
