From the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation State Coach Mike Deroehn,

For anyone interested in learning more about coaches education I encourage you to attend the Copper and Bronze Clinics that are offered.

These are not geared toward just GR/FS technique but rather on coaching philosophy, total program development, match promotion, organizing and developing a club, fund raising, mental imagery, etc. etc. Basically the course lends itself to a group of coaches brain-storming ideas, sharing ideas that they've been successful with, and essentially learning from each other.

It is not a class where I stand up there and "teach" but rather facilitate and guide discussion. We always learn from each other and I find them to be very beneficial.

As Kluever said, I am conducting a Bronze Course tomorrow night at Fond du Lac H.S. beginning at 6pm as well as one next Friday night at Rapids at 6pm.

Cost is $60 for the course. You also need a current USA Coaches card, which is $30 if you don't have one already.

Last December I did an on the mat clinic for coaches in Elkhorn. I'd be willing to do another if there's interest.

As an FYI...I've got some things posted on my page on the WWF website that you may want to review if you're interested in Coaches Education. I'm not saying these are the "right" ways, just some things to share. I'm always learning myself and want coaches who are interested to have access to the stuff I pick up from the O.T.C., other coaches, etc.

Hope that helps and hope to have some of you at a Bronze course this weekend or next. Shoot me an email if you need anymore specifics.

Here are links to some coaches that I think we can all learn from. They discuss program building and share some good insight.

I really like this guy's viewpoints from California. Since watching his interview and then speaking with him in person, I've read the book "From Good to Great" which I highly recommend as well. It involves principles from the business world. The studies examine companies over a 30 year period and look at how to build a top company that has sustained success over a 15 year period and beyond.

It made me sit back and think about how long it really does take to build a great program. It certainly doesn't happen overnight but of course that just reinforces the message that we send to kids who aspire to be champions, so I shouldn't expect it to be much different from a coaching standpoint. (But I sure wish it did!! )
