Inside the historic Simon-Skjodt Assembly Hall on the University of Indiana campus the Wisconsin Badgers clash with the rest of the Big Ten teams to see who is best in the top wrestling conference in the country. With 65 of the athlete in the top 20 in the nation, it’s sure to be a weekend of intense competition.

With one session complete, all ten Badgers are still battling for spots on the podium. Connor Medbery (R Sr) and Isaac Jordan (R Sr) have a podium finished clinched. They will wrestle in the semifinal round later this evening. The other eight Badgers are along the backside fighting their way through the blood rounds. They will also continue later this evening.

After the first-round Wisconsin was in the lead, winning eight out of ten matches. The two that they dropped were lost in overtime. Most notably, Johnny Jimenez (Jr) won by tech fall over Northwestern’s Anthony Rubinetti (R Fr) and Hunter Ritter (R Fr) pinned Northwestern’s Mitch Sliga (R Jr).

In the quarterfinal round the Badgers matched up with some of the top opponents not only in the tournament, but in the country, leaving that round with only two Badgers winning and punching their ticket to the semifinal round later tonight. Three Badgers would hit the top seeds, and three more would face off with the three seed all of them with one thing on their mind: executing the upset.

At 141 lbs Cole Martin went head to head with top seeded Anthony Ashnault (R Jr) from Rutgers. Martin looked tough in the opening period. In the end Ashnault would come away with the 9-1 major decision.

TJ Ruschell (R Sr) not only took on the top seed of the tournament, but the top man in the country in Penn State’s Jason Nolf (R So) at 157 lbs. Ruschell wrestled tough, but eventually wound up on his back, giving up the fall.

Hunter Ritter also matched up with the top man in the country at 184 lbs in Penn State’s Bo Nickal (R So). Ritter wrestled well until in the final period when he also found himself on his back, also giving up the pin.

Johnny Jimenez (Jr), Andrew Crone (R Jr) and Ryan Christensen (R So) hit the three seeds in the quarterfinals.  These matches were hard fought to the end, but none of them ended in Wisconsin’s favor.

Along the backside, Eli Stickley (R Fr) and Ricky Robertson (R Jr) received byes. With that, all ten of the Badgers are still alive after one full session of wrestling is completed.  The battle continues tonight beginning again at 6pm eastern time.
