The Wisconsin Badgers wrestling team opened the Big 10 dual season with a narrow victory over the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington, Friday night.

At the end of the dual, the score was tied 19 all, as each team won 5 matches. The Badgers were awarded a point by tie-breaker criteria to come away victorious. Since there were no pins or forfeits, the tie was broken by official Criteria 3.15.3, “total match points scoring only from decisions, major decisions, and technical falls”. The Badgers had 69 points to the Hoosiers 64.

The cardinal and white earned bonus points in three of five matches, highlighted by a third period tech fall from No. 2 ranked Connor Medbury at heavyweight.

The dual began in exciting fashion, as 157lb. T.J. Ruschell, in his first action of the season, dropped a narrow decision to Jake Danishek 8-7, giving the Hoosiers a three-point lead. Ruschell mounted an admirable comeback attempt after trailing 2-6 early.

Isaac Jordan gave the Badgers the lead with an 8-0 major decision over Bryce Martin at 165.

Ryan Christensen extended the Badger lead to seven at 174 with a 7-3 decision over Devin Skatzka. The Hoosiers won four points back as No. 6 ranked Nathan Jackson posted an 11-2 major decision over Hunter Ritter. Ricky Robertson added four more for the Badgers at 197lb. with a pronounced 10-2 major over Jacob Hinz. The Badgers went into the break leading 11-7.

Medbury came out swinging after the break earning the Badgers a five-point tech fall. Medbury routed Fletcher Miller 18-0, to push the Badger lead to nine, with four matches to go.

Indiana then hit their stride, gaining nine points in two matches, to tie the score at 16. Michael Cullen lost an 18-2 tech fall to No. 12 ranked Elijah Oliver at 125lb. Eli Stickley, fresh off a podium finish at Cliff Keen, lost a tough 14-3 major decision to Garrett Peppe at 133.

With two matches to go, Cole Martin (ranked No. 12) came away victorious defeating Cole Weaver 8-3. It was 19-16 heading into the final match of the night.

In the finale Andrew “Comeback” Crone had the dual on his shoulders. In nail-biting fashion Crone ended wound up on the wrong end of a heartbreaking 5-4 decision, to Chris Perez, leaving the dual knotted at 19.

Despite all the drama, the Badgers came away with the win. The Badgers season opener is Sunday, December 11th, in the fieldhouse. Action against Northern Iowa begins at noon.
