On Friday, the Badgers headed to Durham, North Carolina to take on ACC opponent Duke in the dual season opener. Recording six wins, lead with pins from Isaac Jordan and Ben Stone, the Badgers emerged victorious, defeating the Blue Devils 25-17.
Red-shirt freshman Isaec Quintanilla opened the dual at 157 lbs. for the Badges against Jose Abbate. Quintanilla jumped to a 7-1 lead, but surrendered a pin late in the match. With the Blue Devils up by six entering 165, last year’s Big Ten Champion, Isaac Jordan took the mat against Michael Wright. Second ranked Jordan made quick work of Wright, pinning him at 2:45 of the first period.
Next, at a new lower weight for 2016-17, Ryan Christensen gave the Badgers the lead, with a 12-7 decision over Connor Bass. Duke’s Alec Schenk tied the dual at 9-9 with a 6-3 win over red shirt freshman Hunter Ritter at 184 lbs.
The Badgers put four points on the board at 197 lbs. as Ricky Robertson, up from 174, secured the 18-6 major decision over Alexander Belaia-Martiniouk.
Heavyweight, redshirt freshman, Ben Stone added six more points for the Badgers recording an upset victory on a pin in 1:16 over the 16th ranked Jacob Kasper.
As the dual moved on to the little guys, the Badgers held a 19-9 lead. The Blue Devils gained ground as Thayer Atkins defeated Jens Lantz close 5-3. Eli Stickley got three back for the Badgers winning 7-2 over Cole Baumgartner (Missouri transfer) at 133.
Holding a 21-12 lead with two matches left, the Badgers looked to be in good position to take the win. Blue Devil Zach Finesilver made the dual close scoring a tech fall over Luke Rowh 17-0 at 141.
With the dual separated by five points, and Duke needing a fall for a win, the pressure was on Andrew Crone in the final match of the night. Blue Devil Xaviel Ramos put Crone to his back and held him there almost two minutes at the end of the first period. Andrew fought off the fall and entered the second period down 0-8. Crone battled back and in the final sixty seconds finished a takedown to Xaviels back for six points and an 11-9 decision to ice the dual.
The Badgers continue action Sunday, November 20 in Raleigh, NC at the Wolfpack Open on the campus of North Carolina in Carmichael Gym.
The next dual comes after the Thanksgiving holiday on December 9th, when the Badgers open the Big Ten dual season in the Indiana fieldhouse at 7pm. The first time to see the Badgers in action at home, is Sunday, December 11th, as they host Northern Iowa in a 12pm matinee.
