Badgerland Nationals grows in 3rd year
La Crosse is known for hosting one of the Midwest’s premier high school #wrestling tournaments in the Bi-State Classic, but this weekend, area youth are competing in an up-and-coming tournament, the Badgerland Nationals. Now in its third year, the tournament has drawn more than 700 athletes from nine different states to compete at UW-La Crosse’s Mitchell Hall. It’s co-sponsored by the Eagles, Holmen Youth Wrestling, and the Midwest Wrestling Tour, which puts on a three-tournament series in Iowa, Minnesota and #wisconsin.
MWT Director Jeremy Innes said Saturday the tournament is different than normal youth tournaments because of the competition level it draws among other features.
“Kids get a chance to wrestle some different kids than the same kids they see every weekend at youth opens that they’re participating in,” he said. “We do give singlets to all the champions that participate. They get a custom medal. They get the high school certified officials that I had mentioned, so it’s definitely a step up from just your average open tournament.”
