The Wisconsin Schoolboy Team

Here is the quick descriptions of the 2004 Wisconsin National Schoolboy Dual Team, also known as the  Wisconsin “Custodians”:

Starting off for the “Custodians” is Dylan Kansier at 70 lbs.  The lightweight, hailing from Eastman, WI, was the true meaning of “spark plug”  He ignited the team’s momentum with extreme tenacity and intensity.  This young gentlemen hold a bright future both in the real world and on the mats.

At 75 lbs., an upcoming freshman for Pulaski Community High School, Josh Wengerter was the man.  A truly gifted individual with a no-holds-bar type attitude on the mat, his key highlight of the trip is throwing 3—5pt. throws with two of them in back-to-back matches.

A key figure in this amazing trip was Josh Hall, an alternate 75 and 80 pounder.  With a limited role, this young man brought everything he could when he had the chance.  He is an individual who loves challenges, and is extremely talented.  Who knew he is also a national team member for Wisconsin’s Kids Swim Team?

One of the only wrestlers from the Milwaukee metro area, Joey Immekus (West Allis, WI) is a never-say-die type of athlete.  He is a great listener, has an phenomenal head throw, and a respectful individual.  Not only that, does the kid ever stop smiling?—No.

At the #4 slot for Team Wisconsin, Sam Delain of the World Class Wrestling Club and Sturgeon Bay, WI brought heart and determination to this year’s squad.  Delain is a blast off the mat, very enjoyable, and a great “punk’d”-er.

His back-up, Brett Napowicki of Stevens Point, WI brought his love of the game to the team.  A good demonstration of what wrestling should be like on and off the mat.  Brett is a great friend to have and a really nice guy.

Need I say more when I say “D-Rock”?  Derek Olson, a shaggy, blonde hair athlete from Franklin, WI, brought class and pride to the team.  He can sure tell you what’s cookin because he intense on the mat, yet humorous off.

A future Bonduel star wrestler, Cody Siolka (Shawano, WI) told everyone about Ramona the Janitor, thus it happened to be the creation the the “Custodians,”  and the supposed love relationship between her and Aaron Ackley, one of two Wisconsin’s officials in attendance.  He is a great scrambler and very intense.  He should be a contender in a few years for a high school state title.

Our main man at 95 lbs. is a future Luxemburg-Casco Spartan, Brent Kinnard.  He is an amazing wrestler who soaks the sport in better than a “mop” in water.  What everyone enjoyed in him the most was his constant pressure and attacking, which allowed him to earn passivity rights to score easily on top in par terre position.  No wonder why he received the award for the most technical falls on the team?

Second in the rotation at 95 and 100 pounds, Braydon Weinke, a first year schoolboy from way up north in Clear Lake, made significant contributions when he had to step in and wrestle.  He is an optimistic individual who never complained about what was expected of him, and that is why he is so special.

Another possible candidate for next team is Kalvin York at 100 lbs.  The New Glarus native stepped up to the many challenges in the tournament.  He was a consistent team scorer, who off the mat, is as reserved, polite, and calm as one can be.  This gentleman represented the Madison area well.

On the freestyle portion of 100 lbs. for Team Wisconsin, Bobby Wunnicke, the soon-to-be Dodgeville High School star wrestler, proved many things this weekend.  One is he is very calm and never anxious in tight matches.  Secondly, he holds keen mat intuition.  You gotta love this kid with his smile and heart.

The Most Valuable Wrestler of the Wisconsin National Schoolboy Dual Team was Ben Provisor from Stevens Point, WI.  He was undefeated in the tournament, and put on quite the clinic on the mat.  Ben is a very unselfish person, non-egotistic, and comes to wrestle every match.  This kid holds tremendous abilities ranging from gutting to lifting and throwing to head locking.  Not only that, he gets along with everyone, and always has a good time doing whatever he does.

One of the most intense individuals I have ever met, Matt Gille from Luxemburg, WI came with a purpose---to win, have fun, and make new friends.  The future Manitowoc Roncalli standout was nearly flawless on the mat, yet creative off the mat.  He was the inventor of some of the Custodian chants, really knows how to shift to the left and right, and “punk” someone good!

A future Portage Warrior, Matt Gaffney (110 lbs.) holds all the talents to be something extraordinary in the future.  Talented, smart, and a good definition of the term “student-athlete,”  If this guy blossoms even more, watch out Wisconsin Wrestling!

Another potential star bound for Wrightstown High, Brett Klopp (115 lbs.) went undefeated in freestyle.  From what was mentioned, this gentlemen has become a rising star wrestler growing for a seed into a branching tree almost.  The continual attacking, the constant listening, and his work ethic is his most defining characteristics as a student athlete.  And, believe the coaches---this man is no slouch!

The second New Glarus, WI representative was Cole Schmitt (115 lbs.).  His tenacity and will can outdrive anyone at any day.  An outgoing individual, Cole really served his team’s and own purpose.  We all wish we could get this kid back next year, but he will be a Cadet.

The firstborn of the Friemoth twins from Granton, WI, Cody showed his talents with constant scrambling and explosions.  It would take a lot to stop this guy from moving on the mat.  As a result of constant movement, Cody won big matches.  If anyone were to look up happy in the dictionary, I betcha’ there would be a picture of Cody Friemoth.  He is incredible.  Period.

The more thoughtful of the Friemoth’s, at a weight up, 125 lbs., Luke showed great scrambling techniques and always wrestled the whole 4:00, also.  The coaches would go out on a limb and say he’s pretty crazy, but we like him.  Everyone enjoyed his senseless humor, and his wacky thoughts.

Going back to 120 lbs., Ben Best, a future Nekoosa Papermaker, showed the ability to be a champion wrestler.  He is well respected, friendly, and kind.  Hopefully, his experiences during the tournament act as a springboard for his bright future.

Zac Cibula, a.k.a. “The Cibsta’,” always brought his “A” game on the mat, but never forgot his keen debate skills off.  The future Luxemburg-Casco Spartan is very basic, straightforward, and happy.  What can’t you be fond of about this kid?  Absolutely nothing!!

A Rocket from Neenah, WI, Sam Engelland, a.k.a. “Sammy!,” can sure hit one heck of a low double leg takedown.  The great guy to screw around with, “Sammy!” knows when it is time to get serious and when it is time to have fun.  “Sammy!” is a good fighter on the mat with a never-give-up attitude.  This kid could be the next Neenah wrestler on top come late February in Madison at the Kohl Center.

A Northern Exposure Wrestling Club wrestler, Jordan Bauman (Stratford, WI) knows how to pick up the intensity.  A strong resemblance of his National Greco Roman Champion brother, Matt, Jordan understands where he is going.  His path includes a high self-esteem and a strong willingness to learn and listen from his peers, coaches, and family.  This man will be tough!

A future Norseman of Westby, WI, Vinnie Pedretti wrestles extremely smart battling the competition until the job is finished.  He listens and follows others advice well.  He has great position, expecially double underhooks, on the mat.  If he continues to wrestle Greco Roman and Freestyle, expect a potential Cadet or Junior All-American.   Not only that, but the curly hair and the uncanny personality make this guy a good friend to have.

At 165 lbs., another Spartan representative from Casco, WI, Trevor Spude showed killer throws, and a funny laugh.  This good guy can have fun, yet be serious when the time comes.  He is curious, creative, intelligent, and the list goes on.  Optimistically, this wrestler has another year of Schoolboys.

In his last year of Schoolboy aged competition, Aaron Rice of Poynette, WI has one tight screw lock.  His fearlessness, intensity, and power make his opponents crumble.  He is nice, friendly, and very knowledgble about the sport of wrestling.  We will miss him!

Big, strong, and quick.  Guess who?  Yep, Drew Barmen from Deforest, WI is fun to watch.  He has a good snap down, a beautiful top lock, and can “sweep” or “mop” any 185 or 205 lb. wrestler to a pin.  Those abilities were enough for him to win Wisconsin’s own Gororian (Pinner’s) Award.  Take notice of this polite, young man---you’ll never know where he may end up (probably the top)!

Another 185/205 pounder, Bobby Harry of Edgerton, WI showed constant improvement day by day wrestling.  He will continue to improve, and should be something special to watch.  The optimistic individual attacks each day on and off the mat with promise of being the best at whatever he does.  He is a hard worker, and enjoys talking to anyone.

From the Madison area, DJ Thurow (225 lbs.) is kind off the mat, yet mean on the mat.  The promising fellow rises to the challenge and will continue to at Madison LaFollette High School.  He constantly works for the greater goal in mind.  Anything he puts his mind to he will achieve.  Besides being kind, he enjoys kidding with his peers and coaches.

Who was the only less experienced Freestyle (but not folkstyle) wrestler on the Custodian team?  Your answer would have to be the willing and able Wesley Dubiel (225/250 lbs.), hailing from Whitehall, WI.  The Freestyle rookie stepped up to plate and hit clutch home runs when it was needed.  Team Ohio remembers that with his clutch pin off of the clinch.  He continually asked questions, helped out, and encourage his team and teammates on to victory.  We should be all thankful for him.

Last, but not least, our “anchor”, also known as Glen-Allen Kendl from Wauwautosa, WI.  One of the more built heavyweights at the tournament, this young man holds an extremely bright future with promise and commitment to be the best at whatever he chooses to do.  He holds nothing back.  Glen-Allen is really fun to watch!

And that is the lineup…but wait a second!

Our team leaders deserve some credit for all their help…

Scott Gille from Rockledge, WI is the proud father and coach of his son, 110 lb. Matt Gille.  Besides his son, he has coached many outstanding wrestlers, and he can now add all of the athletes from that past two years to those list.  His instruction is precise, his voice a bit lost (probably after the first day), and his intensity is legendary.  The thing about him one has got to love most---his love and willingness to help the great sport.  We will all miss you and wish you luck in the future! THANKS, SCOTT!

How does that one chant go?

“Who’s our fearless leader?”

“ED!”

No one will forget his incredible efforts to organize and make the Wisconsin Schoolboy Freestyle and Greco-Roman a success.  His ability to think, improvise, and do is legendary.  He has made this trip into what it is now—very popular.  His ability to work with the athletes, parents, event organizers, and coaches was flexible and amazing.  The thing one must appreciate about his volunteering was his love of this trip, especially when his son was no longer able to compete.  Ed—Best of luck to you in your future endeavors and may you stay connected with this trip in some way, shape, or form.  THANKS, ED!
