MIDLANDS – (Evanston, IL)  As the first day of the 54th Ken Kraft Midland Invitational ended, the Wisconsin Badgers boast a healthy eighth place standing. With nine of 16 Badgers still in the hunt for a spot on the podium, four of whom made it to the quarterfinals, there’s a lot to look forward to as day two gets under way.

Connor Medbery has been the star of the heavyweight class, garnering 13.5 team points for the red and white. Holding the number one seed, Medbery has yet to be defeated this season. Following a close 2-1 opening win over David Henry (Oregon State), the senior rounded out his 3-win day with a tech fall (16-0) of Nickolas Gajdzik (Harvard) and pinning Michael Boykin (North Carolina State) in 3:36.

Merrill native and redshirt freshman, Mason Reinhardt (197lb) began his first Midlands in show stopping fashion. He started 3-0, plowing his way to the quarterfinals before a 0-6 loss to Nate Rotert (South Dakota State). After tying his second-round match against Purdue’s Christian Brunner in the final seconds, Reinhardt went on to win in overtime. In round three Reinhardt won by fall over Matt Williams (CSU Bakersfield) in OT at the 8:30 mark.

The announcer stated, “If having the least number of pins in the most amount of time was an award, Reinhardt would have it on lock.”

Eli Stickley (133lb), proved his worth with 7.5 team points on the strength of two pins and a tech fall.  After a 4-1 first day, the redshirt freshman is working his way back through the left side of the bracket. With a podium spot within sniffing distance, Stickley is bound to be hard to beat as day two opens.

Ricky Robertson (197lb) went 3-1. He suffered a loss by fall one round short of the quarterfinal.  With a loss, the remainder of Robertson’s matches are ‘do or die’, as is the case with most the Badgers who remain in competition.

TJ Ruschell (157lb.) took two victories reaching the quarterfinal round. Losing to transfer and former Northwestern NCAA Champion Jason Tsirtis (Arizona State) 2-5 in the quarters, Ruschell was tossed into the back side of the bracket and must keep winning to place.

Per usual, redshirt junior Andrew Crone (149lb) has been a crowd pleaser, blasting doubles and scoring points in the last seconds of matches. With a 4-1 loss to Joshua Maruca (Arizona State) in the second round, the rest of Crone’s matches have become win or go home. Riding a four-match winning streak while going 5-1 the first day, there’s so much to look forward to tomorrow.

Cole Martin (141lb) won a decision over Wisconsin native Robert Lee (Kaukauna, WI/Pittsburgh 3-1) then lost a major decision 13-3 to Chad Red (Nebraska). Martin took a medical forfeit loss in Round 4 and it is not clear if he will return on Friday.

At 184 redshirt freshman Hunter Ritter suffered an injury early in his opening match and lost by injury default. He did not return to action as he suffered what appeared to be a knee injury.

The Badgers, have been matching up with teammates on the backside of the brackets. Johnny Jimenez., wrestling unattached, matched up with Jens Lantz after sustaining their first losses, meaning the winner knocked a teammate from the tournament. Since Jimenez was unattached he wasn’t on the “scoring ten” roster, but Jens was. Now, Jimenez, with a 5-3 decision over Jens Lantz, keeps wrestling, but not claiming points to help the Badgers catch up to frontrunners Iowa, Nebraska and Rutgers.

Wrestling begins today at noon central standard time (CST). Matches can be streamed online on BTN2go. The final round begins at 7:05pm with the finals broadcast live on Big Ten Network. Be sure to tune in to see if the Badgers can gain ground in the standings, and bring some hardware home from Evanston in the process.
