Roth and Chappa go to state. Noteworthy: Roth looked dominating the entire day. Chappa is going to be a good one. He rarely is in bad position and is a heck of a fighter for only weighing 93 pounds. Third place match: John Buntrock (35-8, soph., Ashwaubenon) pinned Chris Beechwood (33-7, sr., Marinette) 3:22. Semifinals: Chappa beat Buntrock 2-1; Roth pinned Beechwood 1:00 First Round: Buntrock beat Rob Coe (Appleton North) 16-1; Chappa pinned Will Surprise (Shawano) 5:34; Beechwood beat Calvin Krogwold (Appleton West) 5-0. 112 POUNDS Championship Match: Josh Hanson (42-3, jr., Wisconsin Rapids) beat Andy Miller (33-5, jr., Appleton North) 6-2 No wrestleback: Hanson and Miller go to state. Noteworthy: Hanson avenged a poor showing at the regional, by bouncing Justin Teppo 3-2 in the semifinals. Then a less then motivated Teppo lost 4-2 in the third place match to upstart senior Brandon Raikowski (13-15 senior from Stevens Point). Third Place match: Raikowski beat Teppo 4-2. Semifinals: Miller beat Raikowski 6-4 OT; Hanson beat Teppo 3-2 First Round matches: Raikowski beat Jason Bantle (32-4, sr., Marinette) 9-8; Miller pinned Dustin DeGreef (35-8, frosh., Green Bay Preble) 1:32; Hanson pinned Spencer Peterson (36-7 Green Bay West soph) 3:42; Teppo pinned Austin Mannering (23-15, jr., Ashwaubenon) 1:35. 119 POUNDS Championship Match: Mike Murphy (35-5, sr., New London) beat Andy Casper (18-7, jr., Rapids) 9-2. No wrestleback: Murphy and Casper go to state. Noteworthy: Murphy looked impressive while getting back to state after a one year hiatus. Casper beat Paul Prentice (39-5, jr., Pulaski) 7-5 in the semifinals, getting a questionable takedown at the buzzer to win. Casper, however, wasn’t given a takedown in the waning seconds of the second period. So everything played out. Match should have been decided in overtime, though. Third place match: Prentice beat Shawn Grutzik (30-10, jr., Appleton West) 10-9 Semifinals: Casper beat Prentice 7-5; Murphy beat Grutzik 7-3. First round matches: Prentice beat Justin Talbot (Appleton North) 7-5; Casper beat Adam Plowman (Bay Port) 16-5; Grutzik beat Reece Peterson (36-4, sr., Green Bay West) 3-1; Murphy beat Heath Berman (Marinette) 14-1. 125 POUNDS Championship Match: Craig DeGreef (33-1, sr., Green Bay Preble) pinned Alex Lardinois (26-8, sr., Bay Port) 5:14. Lardinois upset Seth Parascand (Waupaca) in the first round. Third place match: Redepenning beat Ryan Wilke 8-1 Semifinals: DeGreef beat Redepenning 9-5; Lardinois beat Ryan Wilke (30-8, sr., Hortonville) 7-1. Noteworthy: Leggett outwrestled DeCleene the entire match, but DeCleene got late points to pull out the victory. Third place match: Shawn Loch (22-18, jr., Bay Port) pinned BJ Reiland (Appleton North) 3:18 Semifinals: DeCleene beat Reiland 12-3; Leggett pinned Loch 4:17 First round matches: DeCleene pinned Nick Ninneman (Hortonville0 3:08; Reiland beat Josh Buettner (Pulaski) 6-1; Loch pinned Bob Brush (New London) 2:52; Leggett tech. falled Rick Parilek (Antigo). 135 POUNDS Championship match: Kyle Lasecki (37-5, sr., Pulaski) beat Jake Wanty (32-5, frosh., Waupaca) 3-2. Wrestleback: Clint Weiler (33-11, sr., Rapids) beat Wanty 3-1 OT; Lasecki and Weiler go to state Noteworthy: Lasecki earns first berth after losing past two years in wrestlebacks to state place winners. Ironically, Lasecki lost to Jake Wanty’s brother Jerry in a wrestleback last year. Wanty is going to be very good. He looked and wrestled nothing like a freshman. Wanty bounced Rob Graef (33-4, jr., Ashwaubenon) 7-6 in the semifinals. Four times Wanty was in deep for a takedown, but Graef found his way off the mat. Wanty really took it to him. The match really wasn’t as close as it may look. Weiler then bounced Graef in the third place match. Second year in-a-row that Graef hasn’t wrestled well at the sectional. Last year he was pinned in the first round after coming in as a regional champ. Weiler won a thriller over Wanty to go to state. Probably the most exciting wrestling of the day came in this weight class. Third place match: Weiler beat Graef 2-1 Semifinals: Wanty beat Graef 7-6; Lasecki beat Weiler 2-0 First round matches: Graef beat Brent Ellis (Appleton North) 13-6; Wanty beat Adam Enderby (Green Bay Preble) 8-1; Lasecki beat Greg Schroeder (Hortonville) 9-1; Weiler pinned Cam Sanford (Antigo) 1:28 140 POUNDS Championship Match: Kevin Tritz (42-2, soph., Rapids) beat Jon Slezak (28-4, sr., Stevens Point) 2-1 OT No wrestleback: Tritz and Slezak go to state. Noteworthy: Bath beat Felts 6-2 in semifinals 171 Championship Match: Ben Casper (40-4, sr., Rapids) won by forfeit over Jessie Stodall (Shawano, 21-4, Sr) No wrestleback 189 Championship Match: Dane Thompson (42-2, jr., Rapids) beat Landon Gonnering (30-8, sr., Bay Port) 1-0 No wrestleback 215 Championship Match: Jarod Hart (31-3, sr., Hortonville) beat Brad Vanderveren (38-7, sr., Pulaski) 3-0 No wrestleback Noteworthy: Vanderveren went into overtime in his first round match before beating Nate Groshek (3-9, freshman from Stevens Point) 6-4. Groshek had Vanderveren on his back at one point. 275 Championship Match: Matt Wanta (31-5, sr., Stevens Point) beat Mike Homan (Shawano 32-5, sr.) 4-2 Wrestleback: NO SCORE: Homan had to wrestle upstart Bret Oswald (4-1, jr., Antigo) Noteworthy: Oswald was wrestling JV just a few weeks ago.
