How about starting wrestling practice on the first weekday (M, TU, W, TR, F) of December each year?
Starting practice the first week in December would do the following for
wrestling:
4) Get wrestling away from <<<ALL
High School Football >>>!
REASONING:
Let's get away from the overlap and give kids a little time out of the pads before wrestling starts to get refreshed and excited to start wrestling. Many kids are just not ready to trade in the helmet for the headgear the very next day.
It is my experience, some kids don't feel like coming out for wrestling that
soon.
3) Get wrestling away from <<<Thanksgiving Holiday>>>!
REASONING:
It is a royal pain in the rear-end for coaches when season practice has just begun and right away you hear: "Coach, I won't be at practice next week, we are going to my grandmas house for Thanksgiving". ETC, ETC, ad
nausea!!!!!
2) Get wrestling away from <<<Thanksgiving Dinner>>>!
REASONING:
The dinner is not a bad thing, but it creates a lot of bad public relations for wrestling when millions of wrestlers are telling their grandparents and aunts and uncles "No, I can't eat ANYTHING! I am out for wrestling." I think this is ALWAYS a ploy for sympathy and that kid will sure as heck be eating junk food that evening and every day thereafter.
1) Get wrestling away from <<<Deer Hunting>>>!
REASONING:
AGAIN.....it is a royal pain in the rear-end for coaches when season practice has just begun and right away you hear: "Coach, I won't be at practice next week (or the next TWO weeks, etc.), we are going 'UP NORTH
HUNTING' ". ETC, ETC, ad nausea!!!!! This would mean all kids (and all coaches who
hunt) can hunt to their hearts delight BEFORE wrestling starts.
All meets could be scheduled and wrestled during the time left between the
second week in December and WIAA regionals. The Regionals would still be
held the same weekend as they are currently.
-In fact: many conferences (not ALL conferences) don't have a dual the week of
the Conference Tournament
-In fact: many teams don't wrestle during the first week teams are allowed their earliest meet, and that may be largely due to the
"interruptions" mentioned in numbers 1 and 3 above.
